The series, set in Oakland, California, follows the life of Grace Sherwood, a 65-year-old widow, as she struggles to make a life for herself at the home of her married daughter, Myra Bradley, a beautician, and her husband, Walter Bradley, manager of the Penny Mart Supermarket. While tending her husband's grave, Grace meets and falls in love with Herbert Morrison, a widowed grave digger. Believing Herbert is not a gentleman, Myra disapproves of him.A family crisis ensues when Grace, feeling herlife is unfulfilled because Myra and Walter are childless, states her intent to continue seeing him. Serial-type episodes relate Grace and Herbert's courtship, Myra's final acceptance of Herbert when she realizes her mother genuinely loves him, and Herbert's marriage proposal to Grace. |
