Monkey Magic (1998)

Series based on a Chinese classic. Tells the tale of Kongo, a magical monkey who is released after 500 years of imprisonment. Freed by Sanzoh, a young and idealistic priest, together they set off on a journey to forbidden Western lands in search of an ancient text that carries within it the magic that once ruled his country and could once again restore law and order to his desperate land.
