The series, set during World War II, depicts the exploits of the men and women of Lifeline, a Belgian organization that helps Allied servicemen to escape from the Germans and return to the fighting. The title refers to the least celebrated fighters of the war -- the many people (including young women who were leaders) who were untrained, from all classes and occupations, and who ran escape lines in occupied Europe for the Allied airmen shot down on bombing raids to Germany. |
