| Serbis on the Go (2004)Can information be described as sweet? Yes is the answer, if you are to ask Gina dela Vega-Cruz, host of IBC's Serbis on the Go!, a public service program, which is marking its second anniversary on air. Gina, a Broadcast Communication graduate of UP Diliman who is also vice president for Communications of pre-need giant, Berkley International Plans/Family First, believes that information is the most basic of services that could be provided to the citizenry. “Information is wealth, information is power,” she says. “Before a person can benefit from any good program—be it sponsored by the government or the private sector—that person has to know first that such a program exists and is available for him,” Gina explains. Gina laments that well-meaning individuals and organizations do not tire of conceptualizing and undertaking programs that have the potential of benefiting thousands, if not millions, of Filipinos. These excellent programs, however, sometimes fall by the wayside simply because targeted beneficiaries are not aware that the program is there for the taking. This is where Serbis on the Go! aims to make a difference. “The show serves as a bridge to the people. Let's say you are implementing a program and you want more people to know about it, then Serbis becomes your channel. We discuss in the show exactly what kind of help or assistance you are providing and the steps that people need to take in order to get its benefits,” Gina expounds. Serbis takes on the format of a live discussion with guests, with phone-in questions from televiewers to allow immediate feedback. Gina is quick to point out, however, that the show has a host of other features that would make watching even more worthwhile. Payo ni Doc regularly dishes out health tips to help mothers find easy first-aid solutions to their families' health woes. Hanep-Buhay, on the other hand, gives out the basics of starting one's own business so that those with an entrepreneurial spirit will be equipped with the ABC's to jumpstart their own negosyo. Job openings are also announced from time to time. Gina proudly shares that Serbis has gotten the much coveted Anak-TV Seal Award, which simply means it is child-friendly and parents have nothing to worry about if their children watch it. “Not only does the program provide a load of informative discussion, it also provides an avenue for value-formation, particularly, on the importance of hard work, awareness, perseverance, hope, and positivism,” Gina elaborates. There is more excitement to look forward to now that Gina is being joined by new IBC president Jay-Jay Yambao as co-host in the program's new timeslot. According to Gina, Jay-Jay, being a former Mayor of Malabon City, is a young and true public servant whose political background will give a fresh perspective to the show. For a starter, Gina happily shares, “Our President, Mr. Yambao, has already committed to expand and make more frequent our Aksyon Line, a special segment that brings to the community level basic services like free medical and dental missions, feeding programs, and even relief goods and supplies for disaster victims. Having worked closely with the masses, Mr. Yambao would certainly know how to improve Serbis so that the show becomes more responsive to the needs of our people. This early, his enthusiasm is apparent and I can feel that his joining the show would prove to be a most auspicious move for us.” Gina concludes, “Information is a power tool. When accurate and used for the right purpose, it empowers us all. It uplifts, it builds. Through Serbis, we hope people would make the habit of actually pursuing and chasing information as a means to improve their lives and that of their loved ones.” With a host as articulate and pretty as Gina—who, by the way, hails from Bulacan but whose mother is from Catbalogan, Samar—information, indeed, could be most sweet. As she explains, when a thing helps, it delights as well so you start to think of it in positive terms, not the least of which is “sweet.” The adjective, we may well add, aptly describes the disposition and demeanor of this multifaceted career woman who is also a wife and a mother to four kids, including identical twin girls. Serbis on the Go! is a production of Integrated Broadcasting Corporation with Public Affairs head, Mayette Camacho, as executive producer. Scriptwriter is Paz Santillan and co-host is IBC president Jay-Jay Yambao.
