When Penny Alston, a vice president with Aura Cosmetics, believes her husband Sam's life as a writer for "Sports Life" magazine is better than hers and idly wishes they could trade places, her wish is granted by an impish statue she had purchased from a gypsy. The series, set in Los Angeles, relates their comic adventures as Penny, with Sam's personality, and Sam, with Penny's personality, struggle to adjust to life as "each other."
