San Francisco phone company employee Sydney Bloom has been haunted since childhood by the auto accident that killed her father and twin sister, so she keeps to herself and spends her spare time on her PC playing the latest virtual reality game. During one of these sessions, she is shocked when she stumbles into the fabled "fifth level" of virtual reality, a surrealistic fantasy world that uncannily has a ripple effect into the real world. Among those seeking to use this power to their own ends arecomputer science professor Frank Morgan and Oliver Sampson, a mysterious figure who frightened her father on the night of his death. Virtually the only trustworthy friend she has in her life is Duncan, a neighbor she has known since childhood.
