A new boyfriend for Rachel

Rachel Alejandro

Author: Norma Japitana

GLOWING and beautifully tanned, Rachel Alejandro captivated the audience at the party  for Manila Mayor Lim and Isko Moreno last week. Catching up with Rachel while waiting for the speeches to finish, we found out that Rachel has a new special man in her life.

No wonder she is looking so beautiful these days. Her new boyfriend is a Spanish journalist based in Manila for three years now.

From Rachel we learned that  dad Hajji Alejandro is forming a   group to include her and her brother Ali. It's going to be a family group to perform here and abroad. A welcome development on the entertainment scene.

Jojo Alejar, Janet Basco and Marco Sison shared the stage with Rachel that night. The three have been  friends of Isko from way back.

THE heating  political season also brought out the popular stars campaigning for their politicians of choice. Number one on the list is Kris Aquino who is campaigning for her brother Noynoy.   Joining Kris on sorties are her sisters,  husband James Yap and her  delightful son Baby James Yap. Also with the Kris bandwagon are stars from the Kapuso network like Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera.

Competing with Kris as campaigner is "Wowowee's"  Willie Revillame  who put up  special shows for Manny Villar in different provinces with his "Giling giling" girls and other stars.   His shows for Villar is always  packed. But with Villar losing out  to Noynoy in the latest survey means that Kris has an edge over Willie as campaigner.

The sidewalk usiseros are now betting on the positions of Kris and Boy Abunda  if Noynoy wins. Kris answered this early on that she will go abroad and will not be seen in the palace. There is no truth to the rumor that Boy Abunda will be head of the presidential guards.

How about Willie? Will there be a romance between him and the beautiful Camille Villar? What position will he take? But with his present popularity and financial success, even a position as Customs commissioner will be a demotion for Willie. Also with the Villar bandwagon is the comedy king Dolphy and Sarah Geronimo who is campaigning for  Loren.

For the Erap-Binay tandem the regulars are Marissa Sanchez and Rico J. Puno, who is also running for vice mayor with Jun Jun Binay as mayor in Makati. People were expecting more stars to go with Erap like in his last race sorties. But the crowds are getting bigger with Erap himself as the big draw. The tandem were closing up with Villar in the last survey.

For most campaigners the reason is financial. Racket lang. Others are committed to the cause and the issues of the party. That seems to be the case with Kris and Boy and their group. Either they are friends of Kris or they believe in Noynoy. For Willie, it is the challenge to make Villar win. For others it is a combination of both: Believing in the candidate and earning some money for their efforts. But there are things to consider.

Some popular stars may lose their luster campaigning for an unpopular candidate. The same way that a candidate may not be helped  if he gets the wrong kind of star to endorse him.
