| Alfred `pressured' in new game showAuthor: Remy Umerez Alfred Vargas and Miriam Quiambao were the first celebrity guests who opened the new game show, Kakasa Ka Ba sa Grade 5. How did this true-blue Ateneo boy (from grade school to college where Alfred graduated from economics management) fare? The first question worth P1,000 was an easy one. It is on Sibika at Kultura. Ano'ng tawag sa lupang napapaligiran ng tubig? Alfred answered it correctly, "Pulo. " The next question looked for the name of the ship used by the Chinese merchants in the pre-Spanish era. Alfred was positively sure it was called galleon. But it was a wrong answer so the "classmates" saved him. It was actually called a junk ship. Galleon ships were used by the Spanish traders. We thought the next query was an easy one. Under the grade 1 English category, the question was: Which part of the book protects the pages? Alfred didn't get it right and was saved by classmate Joshua who wrote "cover" as the answer. Alfred next chose grade 2 Math where he replied that there are 500 centimeters in 5 meters. Still, his winnings were a long shot from one million. Next question: How many prepositions are there in the sentence, "The little girl sat on a stone beside a brook. " He asked for help again and the actor was saved. The next question which could have been easier when asked in English was: "Anong salita ang nagpapakita ng kilos o gawa?" Alfred said balarila obviously just wanting to come out with an answer. He was wrong. The correct answer was pandiwa. Alfred was right in observing that when you are already there as contestants, recalling what you learned way, way back is not easy. Before the quiz contest started, Alfred was told by the "chairman of the blackboard," Janno Gibbs, that should he fail, he must announce, "Nakakahiya man sabihin pero hindi ako kakasa sa grade 5". Holding a kalabasa on his hand and with great regret, Alfred delivered what Janno had requested him to. The actor, though, went home with P50,000. What an easy way to earn money in less than 30 minutes. Will Kakasa Ka Ba sa Grade 5 beat 1 vs 100 in the rating chart? RAYMOND COMES FULL CIRCLE RAYMOND Lauchengco is back with The Company who gave him the break in 1982. Indeed, the still debonaire-looking singer who was part of the bagets syndrome has gone full circle, thus the title of his new CD, Full Circle, under Viva Records. Raymond was recommended by Sharon Cuneta to Viva during the 80s and has appeared in three hit movies: Bagets, Hot Shots and Saan Darating ang Umaga. His showbiz stint was made more memorable when he recorded two big hit songs: So It's You and Farewell. By choice, Raymond in his new album sings hits from the 80s which include the following cuts: Walking On Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves, Let's Go by Wang Chung, Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Ashley, Always Something There to Remind Me by Naked Eyes, You Are Everything by the Real Thing and Wake Me Up Before You Go by Wham. Raymond sings them with an orchestra. Says Raymond: "I have been in love with standards ever since and I have seen other artists perform them in their own way. I want to make this a bit more interesting. Recording them with a nine-piece band makes a lot of difference. It added new hip (to the album). " Full Circle was produced by Alwyn Cruz and Mia Lauchengco with Vic Oria as musical director and supervising arranger. The CD is now available in leading music stores under Viva Records label. SHINE, Empoy, SHINE Presently, he is included in the cast of Abt Ur Luv where he plays the role of Julio's friend (portrayed by Bench winner Carlo Guevarra). He is also going to compete in Shall We Dance championship and do a comedy film with Makisig Morales and Vhong Navarro. Comedians are a dime a dozen. We hope Empoy becomes an exception. We look forward for his star to truly shine now that he is with Star Magic. Source: People's Journal |
