Backroom artists spread holidays cheer

IT is Christmas and it is the best season of the year. And before the year ends, Backroom artists will launch their "huling hirit."

Comedy Concert Queen Ai Ai delas Alas leads the pack with an entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival titled "Tanging Ina Ninyong Lahat." Produced by Star Cinema, Ai Ai will visit SM Malls on December 20 at SM in Bulacan, December 21, SM in Bacoor. On the live stage, she will host the Smart event at the World Trade Center on December 19. On TV she plays Betty la Fea’s mother.

Erik Santos, son of an OFW, honors families of OFW at the Ayala Center in Cebu on December 19. He also released a Christmas album that contains the single currently played on the airwaves titled "Christmas Is." Erik is a mainstay of "ASAP ‘08."

The trio of Mariel Rodriguez, Bianca Gonzalez and Drew Arellano still lords it over on TV. Mariel is a co-host of "Wowowee" and "E Live." She is part of the newfantaserye "Isang Lakas" on ABS-CBN with Vhong Navarro, Luis Manzano, Shaina Magdayao, John Pratts, and Jon Avila. Bianca has "E Live" on ABS, "Cinema News" on Cinema One, "TFC Connect," "Y Speak" on Studio 23. She has a new show, "IamNinoy" on TV 5. Drew, meanwhile, is busy with corporate shows aside from his regular stint in "Unang Hirit" on GMA and "Balikbayan" on Q Channel 11.

Pooh and K Brosas still make people laugh with their unflappable antics. Pooh performs on December 20 in Balagtas, Bulacan, December 23 at Pagcor Casino in Tagaytay and December 28 at Thunderbird Resort and Fiesta Casino in Binangonan, Rizal. K Brosas joins Pooh on December 20 in Balagtas, Bulacan. The following day December 21, she will entertain casino goers of Pagcor in Angeles. And on December 30 K has a special performance in La Union. K is currently shooting a movie with Maricel Soriano for Star Cinema directed by Chito Rono.

Gretchen Barretto flies high with her new game show on ABC 5 "You and Me Against the World." Rufa Mae Quinto is this year’s Star Awards Best Comedy Actress. She is one of the "Desperadas" girls in Regal Films’ entry to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival, "Desperadas 2." A new movie is coming up in 2009 billed "Singles." Rufa is a regular in "Bubble Gang," "SOP" and "Showbiz Central" on GMA 7.

Author, entrepreneur and TV host Christine Bersola is busy with corporate assignments. She hosts "Busog Lusog" and "Look Who’s Cooking" on Studio 23.

Singers Ariel Rivera, Sitti and Kim Flores are busy with corporate shows. Ariel released an album, "Once Again," under Sony BMG. Sitti is a new addition to the growing Backroom family. She has a Christmas concert on December 17 at the Music Museum and has a new album under Warner Records. Angellie Urquico who was a grand champion in "Little Big Star" just finished an indie movie "Ugat sa Lupa" directed by Ariel Reyes.

Actors Arnold Reyes, Lloyd Zaragoza and Ina Feleo are busy with acting assignments. Arnold is part of thefantaserye "Dragonna" and "Isang Lakas" on ABS-CBN. He has a regular TV show "Camera Café" on QTV 11 and GMA 7. Called the independent actor, he is soon to make another indie movie under War Film. Ina, on the other hand, is part of the Judy Ann Santos teleserye "Humiling Ako sa Langit." She just wrapped up shooting another indie titled "Crossing Boundaries" with De La Salle students and will start shooting "Okey Lang." Ina appears in the new Dolphy show "Utoy" on TV 5. Lloyd is with "Betty la Fea" where he plays one of the protagonists.

GB Sampedro has his hands full with assignments. GB directs the daily show "Boy and Kris." He is also at the helm of "Persona," a weekly show on Cinema One. His indie movie "Astig: Mga Batang Kalye" is a semi finalist in the 2009 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. Another movie is also in the can titled "Bola." Next year, he directs Toni Gonzaga’s concert and Charice Pempengco’s first major concert. Bobby Garcia just finished the Tony Award-winning "Hairspray" which was staged at the Star Theater.
