Bea ready to die; Sam ready to love

Author: Edgar Cruz
Column: BuzzStation

At the And I Love You So grand press conference hosted by Star Cinema at the Dolphy Theater, lead actress Bea Alonzo declared she’s “ready to die.” Why? Director Laurenti Dyogi praised her excellent acting in her first solo starrer. Co-star Coney Reyes also acknowledged her as “the next important actress,” raving about her readiness to learn and not pretending to know everything.

Co-star Sam Milby, on the other hand, admitted in the same occasion that he’s prepared to have a new girlfriend and he’d like it to be Bea. This confirms this columnist’s scoop that there’s mutual attraction going on between the two stars and a painless courtship is taking place between them. Could this Bea-and-Sam love slant be a promo peg? I don’t think so. Both are ready to fall in love and they are ready for each other.

Bea and Sam are lovers in the full-length feature where she turns into a mature actress. In the movie, she reveals more skin than ever before by wearing a two-piece bathing suit in a scene and doing a bed scene with Sam.

Both are single right now. Both have moved on from their last relationships, Bea with Mico Palanca and Sam with Anne Curtis. Their pairing has chemistry as both are good-looking, and it looks like the attraction is happening naturally, not as a promo peg for And I Love You So.

There’s clearly physical attraction between them. They have similarities, says Bea during the solo interview hosted by Thess Gubi for Star Magic. She adds, "I’m very comfortable with Sam." She admits they are close friends right now. That’s how romantic relationships start these days, right? That’s a good enough beginning.

By the way, when Bea and Sam did a duet on "Cruisin’" in Sam’s Only Me concert at Zirkoh Greenhills, they looked like they were ready to fall in love with each other, that is, if they have not fallen for each other yet.

Bea’s paired off with Sam and Derek in this romantic drama about love, loss, letting go and moving on. She plays Lara, a pre-school owner and young wife who loses husband Oliver (Derek) of five months to aneurism. It happens on her 24th birthday when he finally agrees to dance, a passion he doesn’t share with her but decides to do for her as a birthday gift. But he would die before he can take the first step.

She becomes inconsolable, just like Hilary Swank in P.S. I Love You after Gerard Butler died.

Lara’s business suffers; she can’t even pay her condo and car mortgages. Sam plays Chris Panlilio, who feels like widower after his wife leaves him for another man. How they meet and find the strength and inspiration to love again constitutes the highlight of the movie.

"It’s a difficult role kasi iyak ka nang iyak," Bea admits. But she seems not to have any difficulty shedding tears on cam, as seen in the soaps she has done in the past. "When I was starting, mahirap. But as I grow in this business at lagi kong ginagawa, all I have to do is internalize the role and the tears flow naturally. Dito binuhos kong lahat," Bea says.

And I Love You So will have its international premiere at the Osceolo Performing Center in Orlando, Florida on Aug. 22 and regular international screenings in other cities in the US from Aug. 14 to Sept. 17 and in Canada from Aug. 21 to Sept. 21. It opens tomorrow, Aug. 12, in over 100 theaters nationwide.

Dolphy and Vhong join Santino

for ratings battle

Beginning yesterday, May Bukas Pa miracle boy Santino (Zaijan Jaranilla) has been joined by adult attraction Dolphy and children magnet Vhong Navarro to stage the eternal battle of television ratings. In a town plagued by rats and locust attacks, Dolphy plays a father having a troubled relationship with son Vhong. Santino plays the trouble shooter with Bro’s help.

Rayver believes ‘May Bukas Pa’ for him

Rayver Cruz expresses optimism by using the title of his drama series May Bukas Pa to answer the tabloids’ judgment that there’s no future for him in showbiz. These tabs had buzzed that his career is headed nowhere as it has stayed stagnant despite the headway leading ladies Shaina Magdayao, Sarah Geronimo, and Maja Salvador have made with their own.

He explains at the May Bukas Pa thanksgiving presscon recently, "Alam ko po na hindi pa huli ang lahat, may bukas pa, at malay mo darating din ang para sa akin talaga."

Rayver was hurt when accused of using Sarah to promote his career. "Hindi ko sila masisi kung ganoon ang sinasabi nila; nasaktan ako kasi wala naman akong intention na masama para kay Sarah."

Rayver is part of the No.1 primetime television series May Bukas Pa, which stars Zaijan Jaranilla aka Santino. Its powerhouse cast includes Albert Martinez, Dina Bonnevie, Tonton Gutierrez, Maja, Dominic Ochoa, Lito Pimentel, Desiree del Valle, Arlene Muhlach, Ogie Diaz, Jaime Fabregas, Ron Morales, David Chua, Victor Basa, Ruben Gonzaga, Precious Lara Quigaman, Badji Mortiz, Edgar Sandalo and Liza Lorena.

Cinemanila, not CineTaguig

Taguig is the new venue of the Cinemanila Film Festival after organizers decided to set off from Makati when the local government decided to change Cinemanila to CineMakati. Says Amable "Tikoy" Aguiluz VI, the founding festival director, during the 11th Cinemanila Film Festival press conference at Fully Booked in Boni High Street, Taguig, "Hindi kami papayag to change the name Cinemanila to other names."
Taguig Mayor Freddie Tinga recently signed the memorandum of agreement (MoA) officially welcoming the 11th Annual Cinemanila International Film Festival to its new quarters. Mayor Freddie says, "The city of Taguig is proud of hosting the 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival."

It takes place on Oct. 15 to 25 in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. Tikoy says at least 100 international and local films will be screened from the local indie scene to the award-winners and favorites at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam, Sundance and Pusan during the 10-day festival.

Brilliante Mendoza will be chairman of jury.

The festival will also feature workshops, seminars and master classes. Call for entries are currently ongoing. For more info, contact cinemanila.entries@gmail.com and cinemanila@gmail.com or go to www.cinemanila.org.ph.

V for Channel [V] Philippines

Channel [V] Philippines creative director Jose Javier Reyes like elite rockers Ely Buendia of Pupil and Imago members flash the Victory finger sign giving it a new meaning. From now on, it stands for Channel [V] Philippines. Vowing to open the doors to local artists and indie acts, it has set up such new and homegrown segments such as Turo Turo, Hits All You Can, [V] Tunes Pinas, Popkorn, and Scene and Heard.

Channel [V] Philippines launched the music channel at A-Venue Events Hall, Makati City on July 25. Dubbed as The In[V]asion Party, America’s favorite House DJ Bad Boy Bill headlined the event. The Chicago-based DJ played the latest underground House music mixed together with snippets from hit songs such as Michael Jackson’s "Thriller," Depeche Mode’s "Personal Jesus" and Black Eyed Peas’ "I Gotta Feeling." He kept partygoers on the dance floor from midnight onwards.

With the Channel [V] theme of "invading" the homes of Filipino music lovers, designers made up the venue like the interiors of a spaceship — coldly industrial and aseptically futuristic. The "earthlings" who entered the door were "profiled" by having their picture taken against an outer-space themed backdrop; as if being recruited for the music channel’s planned "takeover."

Other local celebrities spotted at the event were members of Sinosikat and Roots of Nature. Channel [V] International VJ Alvin Alfonso was also on hand all night, interviewing people about anything and everything in step with the bohemian spirit the music channel promotes.

Channel [V] Philippines Sales and marketing director Kathy Alejar said the party was held to set the tone for their forthcoming events, all aimed to shake up the existing status quo for a more vibrant music scene.

These events include The [V] Club Nights; The [V] AMP Tour; Thursday Night Tri[V]ia Royal; The Campus In[V]asion and VJ Quest; The [V] Mall Tours; The [V] Halloween Party; The [V] Youth Forum; and AMP! Live.

Channel [V] Philippines airs on the premier tier Channel 25 of Sky Cable.
