AFTER playing second leads in primetime shows like "Zaido," "Dyesebel," and "Luna Mystika," the love team of Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal is now given the chance to shine on their own in "Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin?," a SineNovela remake of the movie that paired Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion anew in 1984 after they were paired with other partners. It was a mammoth hit and led to Sharon and Gabby’s reconciliation in real life and their wedding at the Manila Cathedral in September, 1984. Sharon won the FAMAS best actress award for her performance then.

"We want to thank GMA-7 for giving us this big break," says Aljur. "My role as Lito is one of the most difficult parts I’ve played so far and I promise to do my best to give it justice."

Lito is a rich college student who comes from a broken family. Carefree and fun-loving, he meets Kris as Myrna, a brainy girl who comes from a conservative family. They fall in love and elope, much to the chagrin of Myrna’s dad, Juan Rodrigo, who believes they’re too young to start their own family. As it turns out, Lito is irresponsible and falls for another woman, the young widow Glacilda, played by Ara Mina.

"We have so many dramatic scenes in the movie," says Kris.

Aljur and Kris are also supported by Carlo Aquino, Mike Tan, Lloyd Samartino, Maritoni Fernandez, Mariz, Krystal Reyes, Maybelyn de la Cruz, Paolo Avelino, Stef Prescott, Rhea Nakpil, Matutina and Jake Vargas.

"Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin" starts airing today, replacing "Saan Darating ang Umaga."

Jolina Magdangal and Judy Ann Santos were both optimistic that they will soon be tying the knot when they shot the film "Ouija" for GMA Films. Both of their boyfriends made guest appearances in it. But now, Juday and Ryan Agoncillo have admitted that they are tying the knot this year while Jolina is nursing a broken heart after her romance with Atty. Bebong Munoz ended. Through it all, she kept quiet about the reason they split and you can feel no bitterness in her at all.

"I guess it’s because we didn’t naman lose our respect for each other," she says. "I’d really like to thank my family and friends kasi I know they were just there noong may pinagdaraanan ako, but no one forced himself on me para makialam at piliting tulungan ako. They kept their distance dahil alam din naman nilang makakaya ko ito, I just need enough time to heal and move on. Ang maganda, Bebong and I parted as friends at nagtex-text pa rin kami every now and then, although hindi kami nagkikita ng face-to-face dahil choice na rin namin yun."

So is she ready to fall in love again? "May nagsasabi nga, kailangan, palitan ko raw agad. May mga nirereto sa’kin para i-date ako. I appreciate their effort na mapasaya ako, but I believe hindi naman another boyfriend ang solution. Pati ‘yung fans ng love team namin ni Marvin Agustin, nagpupunta sa taping ng ‘Dear Friend,’ baka puede na raw kami uli. Natatawa nga ako. Sorry hindi nagpaparamdam at all si Marvin at wala rin akong nararamdaman. At this point, ang dami ko pang ibang gustong gawin. I want to try baking, I want to help out sa CRIBS to take care of handicapped children. I plan to put a business in Tagaytay na salon-gift shop combined. Maraming plano. Dun na lang muna ako."

It might have been just a joke for Dr. Vicki Belo, but Boy Abunda is not at all amused when she said on "Showbiz Central": "If you want to look like Boy Abunda, go to Calayan. If you want to look like Dingding Dantes, go to Belo." "The Buzz" has already ended on air when the portion of Dr. Vicki was shown so Ruffa Gutierrez was able to watch it and quickly informed her co-host about what Dr. Vicki said.

Boy couldn’t believe it as he was just telling Kris Aquino in "SNN" that he misses Dr. Vicki. "Sabi ko, baka mali lang ang dinig nila kasi matagal at malalim ang pinagsamahan namin ni Vicki at wala naman kaming pinag-awayan. She knows na I never capitalized on good looks. Namuhunan ako sa sipag, dasal, tiyaga, at wala akong ilusyong maganda ako. But no one has the right na manlait sa aking pagkatao. Nakakalungkot kasi pati ang nanay ko, tumawag from Samar asking kung meron ba kong ginawang masama kay Dr. Belo at ginawa raw akong katawa-tawa sa TV. I told her wala akong ginawang masama kay Dr. Belo and she knows that I didn’t do anything bad to her to deserve this. We don’t have to look as good as Dingdong Dantes to be a good person."

As for Dr. Vicki, she says she made it clear right after what she said that it’s all a joke. She didn’t realize that some people will take it that seriously. "Pero kahit na joke lang, masakit pa rin," says one writer. "Kasi, kung ako man ang tanungin kung sino ang mas gusto kong maging kamukha between Boy and Dingdong, sino sa tingin mo ang isasagot ko? Sana, di na lang sila pinagkumpara."

Penelope Cruz won both the Golden Globe and Oscar best supporting actress award for her colorful performance of a spitfire artist in Woody Allen’s "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." The film is now being shown in local theaters and this is cause for rejoicing since Allen’s last films were not at all shown here, like "Matchpoint" and "Cassandra’s Dream."

At first, we thought "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" is the full name of one woman. It turns out that the movie is about two friends, Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johannson) and the summer they spent in sunny Barcelona, Spain. Vicky, a brunette, is an architect who gets an invitation from her relatives there. Cristina, a blonde, is a short filmmaker and quite promiscuous. In Barcelona, they meet a charismatic painter, Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), who invites them to fly with him to Oviedo for the weekend where he intends to bed them both. Cristina is adventurous and willing to go but Vicky is turned off by his being too fresh. Vicky is about to be married to her boyfriend Doug (Chris Messina) in New York. Although she’s against the idea, she still goes with them to be Cristina’s chaperone. But Cristina gets sick while they are there and it’s Vicky who ends up going to bed with Juan. Cristina later moves in with Juan until his ex-wife Maria Elena (Penelope) moves back in Juan’s house and they become a threesome, with the very talented Maria Elena encouraging Cristina to explore her talent in photography.

The movie is another one of writer-director Woody Allen’s personal explorations about the vagaries and intricacies of love and relationships. One thing that turns us off in the movie is the monotonous voice-over narration by a know it all narrator who only underlines what’s already obvious and can be very intrusive without offering that much insight. Doesn’t Allen know that movies are meant to show visually, not just tell verbally? The movie is obviously meant to be a comedy, but it’s not really that funny. All you’ll get are some chuckles here. In hindsight, we think what Allen is trying to impart is that love is seldom permanent since hearts can be fickle and minds are changeable. What one loves or desires at one moment may no longer be so in the next year or so. This is the perfect movie for those who do not believe in commitment and fidelity.

But the acting is good. Rebecca and Scarlett both give engaging performances, but they’re easily upstaged by Penelope as the bisexual wife who even seduces Scarlett in the darkroom. Her volatile portrayal makes you realize why Juan married her then divorced her as they are like oil and water that just won’t mix. The other character in the movie is the city of Barcelona itself. It’s obvious Allen has falled in love with it and photographs it beautifully, loving the architecture of Antonio Gaudi. He also gets to use a nice upbeat Spanish title song for the opening and the ending of the movie.
