EVERYTHING is all set for the wedding of Cheska Garcia and basketball player Doug Kramer on October 9, which is also their fifth anniversary as sweethearts.

"I was also expecting him to propose to me on that same date last year. Pero naisahan niya ako.

"He left for Shanghai days before to train. When he called, I asked him kung kailan siya darating. Sabi niya, October 3," she said.

"October 2, a friend of mine, Zahra, invited me to have dinner at the Le Soufflé at The Fort in Taguig City. I wanted to back out at the last minute dahil I had dysmenorrhea.

"Pero sabi ni Zahra, 'di na raw niya puwedeng i-cancelang reservation.

"We were seated na sa table reserved for us when I heard Doug's familiar whistle. Saka ko siya nakitang pumapasok.

"Ang first impulse ko was to get mad at him. In fact, I confronted him and asked him why he lied to me. Kaso, bago pa man ako nakarinig ng sagot sa kanya, he went down on one knee na in front of me.

"Then he took the engagement ring from his pocket and right away asked me if I would agree to marry him.

"I wanted to cry but couldn't. Pero, 'di na ako nakakain," she further related.

It will be a Christian wedding for her and Doug. They agreed to divide the wedding expenses between them.

She will shoulder the expenses for her gown and that of her entourage. And also for the tuxedo which Doug will wear to the wedding.

"I assigned my good friend, Puey Quinones, a couturier-designer, to take care of the wardrobe. She's good," said Cheska.

Doug will shoulder the rest of the expenses. He is also in charge of all the nitty-gritty, including the wedding contract and other documents.

The ceremony and reception will be held at the Blue Leaf Events Place at The Fort.

"I requested Juan Sarte to do my hair and make-up," said Cheska.

On her wedding day, she wants to have the look of Katherine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers in their movies set during the '40s.

The only jewelry she plans to wear, aside from her engagement ring, a Tiffany with one big stone in the middle and two smaller stones on the sides, is a pair of chandelier earrings with diamonds and pearls, which is a gift from Cheska's dad two Valentines ago.

Her parents are separated. But they remain close. Her elder brother lives with their dad in Ayala Alabang. Cheska and her other brother, actor Patrick Garcia, stay with their mom in Greenhills.

Cheska and Doug will stay with her mom for one and a half years while they build their house on the twin lots they own in Forest Hills, Antipolo City.

"My mom loves Doug," said Cheska.

Last Saturday, Cheska attended the first of her many bridal showers.

The gathering, which was held at the Nash Function Room of the Mandarin Oriental in Makati, was hosted by Metro Weddings Magazine, edited by Romina Urra-Gonzales.

Cheska and Doug plan a Mediterranean cruise for their honeymoon, so the theme of the bridal shower was adapted from it. Top florist and events stylist Zeñas Pineda transformed the room into a haven with table centerpieces using cabbage roses, yellow Anastasia, chrysanthemums and leaves. Goldilocks took care of the food.

Two of Cheska's maids of honor, Cheska Litton and Liz Uy, editor of Preview Magazine and John Lloyd's girlfriend, were present at the event.

Also present at the bridal shower were Iya Villania and Danica Sotto, who is married to Doug's fellow cager, Marc Pingris.

Danica and Marc already have a son.

Cheska, Iya and Angel Aquino host the lifestyle show "Us Girls" on Studio 23 which is now on its third year.
