Christine Love returns

After living abroad for a while, Christine Love (whom we knew before as Christine Marcaida) has returned to Manila.

Welcome back, Christine.

And, she is in a concert at the Music Museum on Friday called Up the Clouds: The Concert.

According to her, the concert is also the launch of the album, which her mom (Cecille Marcaida) produced for her. “She also wrote some of the songs in the album, like “Isang Halik Mo Lang” and “Precious Love,” which she says are beautiful melodies.

Christine, now 25, wants to embark on a career in the Philippines after performing in New York (B.B. King Jazz and Blues Club), Las Vegas (Bellagio Hotel), and in last year’s International Jazz Festival with Diane Shur and Flora Purim.

“I miss the city,” she says in English without the affectation of someone who had been in the world’s great entertainment stages.

The last time I saw Christine was with Rico J. Puno at the Hard Rock Café several years ago. She told me then that she was leaving for Australia to study music. She finished a course at the Australian Institue of Music in Sydney.

Now, Christine (she added “Love” to her name, her second name) is ready to take on the challenge of the Filipino audience.

“At the Music Museum, we will be unveiling the album,” she says. “We’re hoping everyone would be excited about it.”

The young singer will be joined onstage by Gabby Concepcion (let’s pray he has gotten over the death of his daddy and can muster to sing something for the crowd) and Nonoy Libanan.

(Tickets to the show are available at Ticket World and Music Museum.)

Gabby goes gold

Speaking of Gabby Concepcion, his album on Warner Music Philippines has finally gone “Gold.”

Released only a month ago, the CD reached the 15,000 sales mark required for the Gold Record status. The CD was launched in a series of mall shows in and out of Metro Manila where Gabby performed all the selections in it. Gabby charmed his way to his audiences’ hearts with every song that he rendered with passion.

The CD contains a selection of songs—a mix of classic OPM ballads, good ol’ standards and a few surprises in between.

Each track represents a memorable episode in Gabby’s movie career and personal life.

Gabby Concepcion is happy to have re-interpreted in one album these hits popularized by his music idols: Rey Valera (“Kung Kailangan Mo Ako”), Joey Albert (“Iisa Pa Lamang”), the late Ric Segretto (“Give Me A Chance”), the former Kilabot Ng mga Kolehiala Hajji Alejandro (“Nakapagtataka”), James Ingram (“Just Once”), Wency Cornejo (“Hanggang”), Hotdog & VST Company (“Manila”/”Awitin Mo…Isasayaw Ko” Medley), Apo Hiking Society (When I Met You), Bryan Adams (“Please Forgive Me”) and a host others.

Of the many songs considered for the album, one track that Gabby Concepcion made sure included was “Come What May” for a very personal reason done with Nina as a duet.

Gabby Concepcion was presented the Gold Record Award in Kapamilya Network’s top-rated noontime program, ASAP. In photo with Gabby Concepcion (center) are: Jim Baluyut, GM of Warner Music Philippines (left) and Neil Gregorio, A&R manager of Warner Music Philippines.
