Chynna leads a straight life

Fans and folks flocked to the La Suerte Supermarket to catch a glimpse of young actress Chynna Hortaleza. This was the second provincial visit set off by Sisters Sanitary Napkins with the GMA Artist Center artist as endorser.

From the shoot of indie horror movie, Viva Films’ Ukay-Hukay, Chynna went straight to the bus and decided to use the four-hour travel time to snatch some sleep. Without much ado, she took the bus’ end seat, wrapped herself with a blanket and snored away.

I thought I knew Chynna enough, but I had a rough recognition of sorts when I found out her surname was Hortaleza, not Ortaleza as I had known it to be since she was a 5 & Up child host, a Click gang member then the viable actress she is today.

She joined the group made up mostly of members of entertainment media that went to Pagbilao in Quezon for the first anniversary of La Suerte Mega Warehouse. With us were Ailenne Go, owner of Sisters Sanitary Napkins and vice president of Megasoft, manufacturers of Sisters. With us were Sarina Jamera, owner of the Prince Maya Bus that took us to Pagbilao, and her friend Janet Lopez. There were also Julian and Violeta Ong, La Suerte owner, which is run by siblings Robbie at Rachel Ong.

The group arrived in Lucena City at 12 noon. After Julian and Violeta treated them to a delicious lunch, Julian showed his pets — full-grown tigers, crocodile and jaguar — to everybody’s fear or delight. Then the group proceeded straight to La Suerte Supermarket for a meet-and-greet with Chynna’s fans, who hung around to catch a glimpse of their idol. When Chynna went on stage, they were ecstatic.

Chynna hosted and performed in the short show. She sang Vanessa Carlton’s "Million Miles Away" and danced, to the delight of Sisters users who attended the occasion. Then she helped distribute Sisters school bags to the female students of Talipan National High School.

They returned to Quezon City at 9 p.m. Chynna went straight to the first day taping of GMA’s Kay Tagal Kitang Hinintay episode of Dear Friend to pilot on July 12. Two highs for Kimerald, 17 for Star Magic!

Tayong Dalawa’s lead stars Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson were awarded as the country’s Most Popular Love Team for Movies and Television by the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation. Kimerald was also the standout at the Star Magic fashion show at ASAP ’09 last June 21. Kim stood out in her minimalist olive green cocktail dress with uneven hemline and appliqués, while Gerald’s skinhead and very manly look definitely made him stand out that night.

With Nyoy Volante and Rhythmic Circle Band doing the "Ants Marching," the teleserye queens and princesses, leading men and matinee idols paraded to kick off Star Magic’s 17th anniversary. Kristine Hermosa, Bea Alonzo, Angelica Panganiban, Shaina Magdayao, Melissa Ricks, Erich Gonzales and Maja Salvador strutted on the runway in their fabulous outfits provided by Philippine Fashion Week designers and stylist Alyanna Martinez.

Also part of this much-awaited fashion show were Megan Young, Nikki Gil, Bettina Carlos, Jessy Mendiola, Maricar Reyes, matinee idols Matt Evans, Robi Domingo, EJ Falcon, Gigger Boys and leading men Jason Abalos and Gerald Anderson. Pokwang and Chokoleit also added more fun in the annual fashion show. The grand entrance of May Bukas Pa’s Santino, Zaijan Jaranilla, was the most applauded.

Opening dance number started with the 1980s medley of Gigger Boys (AJ Perez, Chris Gutierrez, Arron Villaflor, Dino Imperial, Sam Concepcion and Enchong Dee), Thou Reyes, Maja Salvador, Shaina Magdayao, Pokwang, Chokoleit, Kitkat, Rayver Cruz, Melissa Ricks, Kim Chiu and Sam Milby with the G Force. Star Magic singing belters, namely, Laarni Lozada, Sheryn Regis, Yeng Constantino, Nikki Gil and newcomer Thara Jordana, performed an acapella rendition of "Danny Boy."

Rica Peralejo performed once again in ASAP ’09 after a long absence. She sang "That’s All," while Coverboys Victor Basa, Jon Avila, Zanjoe Marudo and Jake Cuenca danced on stage. The star-studded celebration wrapped up with the inspirational production number of VOIZboyz (Ronnie Liang, Nico Antonio, Guji Lorenzana and Jay-R Siaboc), new recording artist Auriette Divina, RJ Jimenez, PDA’s Bugoy Drilon, Laarni Lozada, Liezel Garcia, Sen Nichols, Miguel Mendoza, Chivas Malunda, Sheng Belmonte, Bea Munoz, Cris Pastor, Christian Alvear and Bunny Malunda, Little Big Star finalist Rhap Salazar, Nikki Gil, Sheryn Regis, Maja Salvador, Shaina Magdayao, Bea Alonzo, Kristine Hermosa, Diether Ocampo, Sam Milby and Piolo Pascual.

In celebration of Star Magic’s 17th year anniversary, its artists toured Ayala Malls in the extravagant mall shows that started last April followed by the Wowowee All-Star game held at the Araneta Coliseum. Meanwhile, more than 40 artists invaded the US via the Star Magic World Tour last June 27 at Citizen’s Bank Arena, Ontario, California, and June 28 at Cow Palace, San Francisco, California.

Ready to be... eaten alive

It’s cute. It’s adorable. And it will eat you up! Get ready for this little bundle of terror as the new horror flick It’s Alive brings in the scares on July 22 as released by Viva International Pictures. Based on Larry Cohen’s original and successful cult classic, but rendered more horrifying than the original, It’s Alive takes you on a journey exploring the terrifying consequences of a young woman’s actions.

When asked what drew co-star James Murray on the remake of the 1970s Larry Cohen classic, he shares, "I had never done a horror film and I think it’s challenging for actors because there is nowhere to hide, you really got to go for it as it were. It’s the age-old thing that if you’re not scared then the audience isn’t and you have to work at it (to be convincing)."

Lenore (Bijou Phillips) is about to give birth, but something horrible happens in the delivery room. All the doctors and nurses are gruesomely murdered, but the mother and baby are safely untouched. Hip hop in the Philippines continues to sprout with the coming of a new breed of hip hop, R&B and rap artists like Iloilo-born Young JV, who is Eduardo JV Kapunan III in real life. He spent his growing up years in Toronto, Canada so he never got to know the late King of Pinoy Rap Francis M. although he got acquainted with his popular rap songs without knowing he owed his musical roots to him. Of course, Young does it his own way.

Young JV’s first single is "The Girl," which is currently heard in the airwaves, MYX music channel and YouTube with 15,000 hits. His debut album Ready or Not, a 15-track CD distributed by PolyEast Records, contains songs all written by Young JV. He started developing this skill when he was in high school. He explains, "Nung nasa high school kasi ako nag-susulat na ako ng mga poetry para ibigay ko sa girls. Dun na nag-sisimulang nade-develop ‘yung songwriting skills ko."

Although he was mostly influenced by Chris Brown and Lil’ Wayne/Bow Wow, he considers himself as King of Pop Michael Jackson fan. "Ever since, I love hip hop kaya ito ‘yung pinili ko." He’s currently taking voice lessons.

Ready or Not is composed of the hit single "That Girl," "Ready Or Not," "Doin’ It Big," "I Bet They Can’t Do It Like That," "Can’t Get Enough," "Do The Snap," "The Way I Feel," "Kapayapaan (Give Peace A Chance)," "Can I Kick It," "Don’t Know You," "Lipad Noypi," "Kaibigan Lang," "Olachica," "ShakeShake" and "Outro."

Blind corner: Why actor’s buddies were laughing

This cutie actor had one too many drinks with co-Kapamilya actors in an Eastwood bar. He fell for a girl with flawless skin and soon they were smooching even as he gulped more alcohol. He was so carried away that he was French kissing her in public. Little did he know his buddies were laughing at him for they knew the "girl" was gay, but did not tell him for the heck of it.
