Direk Bobot clarifies that 'Banana Split' is not a sex-comedy show

Author: Bernie Franco

TV director Bobot Mortiz clarified that Banana Split, the latest gag show from ABS-CBN, is not a sex-comedy, an impression that immediately formed because the cast of the show is composed of sexy actresses. "Hindi ito sex comedy," the former actor stressed. "Kung mapapanood ninyo, magagaling ang material namin at acting ang makikita ninyo."

When the teaser of Banana Split started showing, there have been comments saying that the teaser is allegedly suggestive, and that it mainly targets the male audience. The main cast of the show includes Angelica Panganiban, Roxanne Guinoo, Cristine Reyes, and Valerie Concepcion
Angelica explained during a pocket press conference that their show has more to offer than just showing off some skin. "'Yung concept n'ya kase, punung-puno siya ng kaseksihan at katatawanan," the actress began. "Pero it doesn't mean na parati namin kailangang magpakita ng katawan dahil ang importante 'yung talento naming magpatawa. Di naman kailangang naka-two-piece kami parati at i-flaunt nang i-flaunt 'yung katawan namin."

Direk Bobot took pride in saying that the scriptwriters of the show consist of the same writers, who worked in successful past and present gag shows, such as Goin' Bananas, Tropang Trumpo and Goin' Bulilit. He also emphasized that Banana Split, boasts of a cast who are not just sexy but good actresses as well. "Hindi sila komedyante dito, kundi actors sila doing comedy. So maipapakita nila 'yung talent nila hindi bilang komedyante kundi ang magpapatwa dito 'yung script namin," he explained. He also said that Banana Split is like the female version of Goin' Bananas, the popular '80s gag show that starred Direk Bobot himself, Christopher de Leon, Johnny Delgado and the late Jay Ilagan. The director revealed that he is using the same formula he used in Goin' Bananas for Banana Split. "'Yung Bananas namin nung araw, 'yung pinakita namin, we are not comedians noon. We were actors doing comedy. 'Yun din ang gusto kong gawin dito sa Banana Split. Di sila komedyante, artista sila."

Banana Split will premiere on October 11, Saturday, right after Maalaala Mo Kaya.
