Fantasy pairings

Remember Gattaca, the movie that starred former power couple Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman with support from the oh-so-delicious Jude Law? Its premise was that children of the middle and upper classes could be selected through pre-implantation genetic diagnosis to ensure they possess the best hereditary traits of their parents. A genetic registry database uses biometrics to instantly identify and classify those so created as valids, while those conceived by traditional means are derisively known as faith births, god children and in-valids. While genetic discrimination is forbidden by law, in practice it is easy to profile one’s genotype resulting in the Valids qualifying for professional employment, while the in-valids, who are susceptible to disease, are relegated to menial jobs.

The idea of genetically engineering perfect beings seems far-fetched — the stuff of science fiction movies. But we are intrigued. The process of creating beautiful people is a delightfully wicked idea, so, in the tradition of Gattaca, we pair off these individuals to reach our quest of filling this world with beautiful ones, like us!

Dennis Trillo and Angel Locsin

They currently belong to rival television networks and Locsin is quite committed and contented with Luis Manzano. Trillo is single and has ended his penchant for starlets, but still, the pairing is impossible. Some people, however, have not forgotten the time when they were still Argo and Sabina in Majika. During its promotional blitz, while songbird Regine Velasquez sang the ditty “Could It Be Magic,” Trillo and Locsin danced the sweetest slow dance, looking into each other’s eyes and fairly bursting with attraction! With Trillo’s Chinese lineage and Locsin’s Filipina heritage, a bouncing baby with Trillo’s expressive eyes, poreless skin, introverted ways and Locsin’s regal gait could be the next Ms. Universe or the first Filipino male supermodel of the world. We just hope they both have recessive height genes.

Sarah Geronimo and Rayver Cruz

Rumors say that he’s Geronimo’s secret crush and, yes, Rayver does not mind at all. Sarah is the “biggest” singing superstar of this generation. Viva, her management company, is doing its best to ensure that their protégé fills the shoes of either Sharon Cuneta or Regine Velasquez. In case they have a kid of their own, he/she will acquire Cruz’s dance moves and height, and his sensuous pout definitely, and Geronimo’s vocal pipes. And what do we have then? The singing nightingale bird mega superstar for all seasons!

Anne Curtis and Richard Gutierrez

In this case, first love never dies or true love is forever. People refuse to forget the scintillating video of Gutierrez and Curtis while they were doing French. No, they were not learning the language from the fashion capital of the world; they were engaged in a French kiss. With Curtis’ Angelina Jolie-esque lips, Gutierrez’s to die-for Brad Pitt kind of body, we get our own version of a designer baby that will shine over Shiloh Jolie Pitt and Suri Holmes — Mapother (Tom Cruise’s daughter).

Bea Alonzo and Dingdong Dantes

With Bea’s porcelain white skin and Dantes’ mestizo features, brace yourself for a baby with a luminous complexion, literally glowing in the dark. Even Edward Cullen would be envious.

Marian Rivera and Alfred Vargas

Alfred, a true-blue Atenean with a management economics degree, is an endearing example of the rich, educated, modern-day Pinoy. It doesn’t hurt either that he has the good looks of a Filipino, his brown skin making him very reachable and almost like “one of us.”

Rivera, on the hand, is a fiery Española, thanks to her father’s genes that gave her the peaches and cream complexion and hazel brown eyes. These are just some of the reasons why the descamisados and the rest of hoi polloi love her.

Why would a match-up between them be perfect? Brown and mestiza, tall and petite, brawny and comely and, most of all, perhaps Vargas’ Atenean way of speaking will rub off on Marian.

The result of their union: A kid who can charm all sorts of classes.

Heart Evangelista and JC Tiuseco

The basketball heartthrob from San Sebastian, who happens to be the first Pinoy Survivor, does not deny that he likes Heart Evangelista. He has a crush on her, as do macho men in Manila who dig someone who speaks in a sing-song manner, belongs to an affluent clan and possesses a girl-next-door appeal.

The union of these two could produce the best looking Filipino Chinese denizens — and if by some strange fortune, Regal Films is still actively producing movies and giving out post-dated checks by that time — likely to star as leads in the umpteenth incarnation of the Mano Po franchise.

Iza Calzado and Jericho Rosales

Of the many pairings on this fantasy list, the Rosales-Calzado pairing is the one that could eclipse the Hawke-Thurman partnership. Let us count the ways — both are stunners, both are sexy. And what about their intelligence? Jericho, they say, is like a chameleon. Whatever the quirks and eccentricities of his partner, he adapts; Calzado is one of the smartest women in show business and this will be most advantageous for Rosales. The result? Perfect beings.

Time to wave my wand, blow a little star dust, and let us celebrate these fantasy pairings!
