Is Marc Abaya the new primetime heartthrob?

Aside from singing the theme to Humingi Ako Sa Langit with Kitchie Nadal, Kjwan vocalist Marc Abaya is overjoyed to be part of this nurserye starring Judy Ann Santos and Derek Ramsay. He plays the role of Dr. Byron, a hot intern whose playboy image is similar to that of McSteamy in Grey's Anatomy.

"From what I understand so far, McSteamy in the sense that Dr. Byron is confident, he knows the ways of women. I do have a love interest with Ms. Ina Feleo whom I grew up with and she's a brilliant actress and it's an honor to work with her... I'm not sure about having many girlfriends in the show though. But I think eventually magkakaroon ng selosan between me and Ms. Ina," Marc says.

It is definitely a step up from his bad boy character (Francis) in Ligaw Na Bulaklak because he gets to be more mature in Humingi Ako Sa Langit. "I think the nurserye requires a little more discipline for us to be more mindful of our audience. In Ligaw, I have more license to be young, crazy, and cocky. As for the nurserye, what makes it difficult is the fact that your target audience is not your everyday person: It's also the people who know what you're talking about. So if I say things wrong, it looks bad on the show, it looks bad for the credibility of the show," he explains.

Fortunately for Marc, Dr. Byron happens to be a cool guy as well, something to go against the stereotype about doctors being a bunch of dorks. "I am the only doctor who wears black [in the soap]. I have tattoos, too. That was funny because on the first day of shooting, there was a discussion between our two medical advisors about my tattoos. The younger one was like, 'O bawal 'yan, bawal 'yan.' But the older one comes down and says, 'O ano ginagawa niyo d'yan? Kung ano'ng meron 'yan, yun na yun.'" the rock star recounts.

Now on his second acting project on TV, the singer-turned-actor shares that he's getting the hang of it with the help of the people he works with on the set. "That's the biggest thing though, that I'm getting used to it. I thought playing gigs was rock and roll but now I think teleseryes are rock and roll. You work from 10 to 10 not to mention when both seryes collide. Ligaw's schedule is M-W-F and the nurserye is T-TH-S so it's kind of insane. But then again what inspires me is really the crew because these are the people who work everyday and not complain, not once," he proudly remarks.

Other people may speak negatively about band artists going into mainstream, but Marc-who also happens to be the former frontman of the rock band Sandwich-is thankful that even his hardcore fans continue to support all his endeavor. "That's the funny thing. At the concerts, people don't call me [by my real name], they call me Francis. And you know Greyhounds? We were playing fatal music and Greg was like, 'Francis! Nakita kita pare... nung nagaaway kayo ni Timmy (Cruz).' And I was like, 'Ba't mo alam yung kwento? Nanonood ka! Waaah!' So far with the people who are important to me, it was a pleasant surprise. First they laugh at it pero they still watch it. I was also lucky because yung role ko sa Ligaw is very close to who I am perceived to be: the bad boy and the tattoos, it's so him, the drug addict...I have to make that up. I think the challenge now is the nurserye because they're going to see me in a [hospital] gown," he grins.
