Iza: Spare me from Dingdong-Karylle issue

Author: Mario E. Bautista
Column: Freehand

Iza Calzado says she’s tired of hearing people asking her when she and boyfriend Jerry Garcia will get married. “Sinabi ko na, we’re both not ready yet to settle down and have a family,” she says. “Happy naman kami as we are now so bakit kailangang kulitin kung kailan kami mag-aasawa? Enjoy pa ako sa career ko, ‘no? I feel marami pa akong dapat ma-achieve before I become a wife and mom. ”

Iza is the featured star in GMA-7’s Thursday night drama, “Obra”, for the whole month of November. “This is a very hectic month for me as I’m also shooting two movies simultaneously, ‘One True Love’ and ‘Desperadas 2’,” she says. “Goodbye tulog muna ako dahil sa magdamagang shooting at taping. ”

The pilot episode in “Obra” is a horror story directed by Topel Lee, “Sanib,” where Iza gets possessed by two spirits who are mother and daughter. It’s like “The Exorcist” and will be shown on November 6. “Sanib” was also the title of an Aubrey Miles flick megged by Celso ‘Kid’ Castillo for Regal. In “Boksingera” (also the title of Susan Roces’ launching film in the 50s), she plays a female boxer ala-Hilary Swank in the Oscar-winning “Million Dollar Baby. ” In “Beauty Queer,” she plays a perennial beauty pageant loser so she joins a gay beauty contest, like Keanna Reeves in “Reyna. ” In “Stella . 45”, she plays the role of an assassin like Angelina Jolie in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “Wanted. ” As you can see, it’s all very original.

“I myself chose the stories I want to do,” says Iza. “Sabi ko, gusto ko namang mag-comedy so they gave me ‘Beauty Queer,’ at gusto ko ring mag-action, so they gave me ‘Boksingera’ and ‘Stella . 45’. So ‘Obra’ will definitely show different sides of me. ‘Beauty Queer’ is something my late mom will like kasi dream niya talagang maging beauty queen ako. As a child, bawal akong mag-bike kasi baka masugatan daw ako’t magkapeklat. Pero hindi siguro talaga meant for me to be a beauty queen kaya heto, sa TV na lang. For this role, talagang nag-research ako among may gay friends kasi I speak gay lingo all the time. For my action roles naman, I took up boxing and also trained to know different kinds of kicks. Enjoy akong gawin ang ganitong very physical roles. ”

How come some writers she confirmed to them that Dingdong Dantes and her friend Karylle have definitely broken up? “Ay, wala akong kino-confirm na ganun. What I said was magkahiwalay sila kasi si Karylle is in the U. S. at si Dong, naiwan dito dahil we’re shooting nga ang ‘One True Love. ’ Never kong gagawin ‘yung makialam sa buhay ng ibang tao, kahit na close friends ko pa sila. ”

SUNSHINE EXPLAINS ‘SNUBBING INCIDENT’ WITH LUCY

IT first came out as a blind item, saying two wives of top actors snubbed each other at the yacht party of Annabelle Rama. Then some writers named them saying it’s Lucy Torres and Sunshine Cruz who ignore each other after their husbands became rivals when they run for the Senate in the last election.

“But that’s not true,” says Sunshine. “Last year, may nagsulat din ng ganyan. Nag-isnaban daw kami ni Lucy sa birthday rin ni Tita Annabelle held then in Serendra at the Fort. I don’t know kunsaan galing ang balitang ‘yan pero nang dumating ako sa party, ang table nina Lucy at Goma ang una kong pinuntahan at binati ko sila.

“Some people probably think we don’t greet each other but the truth is we have no problem at all. Last month nga, we even had dinner with Lucy and Kris Aquino was also with us. We are at a restaurant na partly owned nina Lucy at Goma. Nang lumabas nga ang balitang we snubbed each other, Lucy even texted me at nagtataka siya kung bakit ang akala ng tao, hindi kami nagbabatian. Sana tigilan na lang ang pang-iintriga sa amin dahil nananahimik kaming tao. ”

SHARON WINS

CONGRATS to Sharon Cuneta for winning in the recent Catholic Mass Media Award. Her Sunday night show, “Sharon”, was given a special citation trophy for providing inspirational entertainment to viewers through showing the life experiences of public icons. The Megastar is currently taking a cruise in the Caribbean with her family so she was not able to receive the award personally, but executive produce Crissy Baluyut thanked the CMMA for the honor. Last year, “Sharon” also got the trophy for Best Entertainment Program. Before she left, Ate Shawie also shot some scenes for “Iskul Bukol: 20 Years After” where she plays a special role as Sharon Escalera, the younger sister of the Escalera Brothers, Tito Sotto and Joey de Leon.

INTERESTING FILMS

THIS year’s entries in the Cinema One Originals filmfest will first be shown in major Metro-Manila universities from November 19 to 25, then they will be shown commercially at Robinson Galleria from December 3 to 9. Two of the seven entries are “Yanggaw” by director Richard Somes and “Dose” by writer/ director Senedy Que.

“Yanggaw” is the story of a family who lives in a tiny village where superstitions still exist in the hearts and minds of the people. Junior’s (Ronnie Lazaro) daughter Amor (Aleera Montalla) comes home with a strange illness that local doctors cannot diagnose. Junior and his family, to their horror, find out that her sickness and the bloody incidents happening in their village are inextricably linked to each other. The film also stars veteran actor Joel Torre and former beauty queen Tetchie Agbayani. The whole film is in Ilonggo.

This was actually the idea of Cinema One Channel Head and Cinema One Originals Executive Producer Ronald Arguelles, that the film adapt the Ilonggo dialect since director Richard was inspired by true events that happened in his hometown. He, as well as actors Ronnie Lazaro and Joel Torre, are all fluent in their native tongue. Tetchie, however, had to memorize her Ilonggo lines. “I don’t easily get scared with ghosts or aswangs, so the biggest challenge for me in this film was to speak in Ilonggo and make it appear that I know what I’m saying. ”

“Dose”, in turn, shows that “Love knows no age or gender. ” When an unlikely friendship develops between a curious 12-year-old boy named Edy (Fritz Chavez) and a lonely gardener named Danny (Yul Servo), the line that defines love and abuse intersects, resulting in a complex relationship that defies age and gender. At first glance, most people might have negative reactions with the very sensitive and controversial storyline, as already expected by director/ writer Senedy Que. “But the fact of the matter is, this is happening in our society today.

I have friends who have experienced this. I am not making this film as a sort of exploitation but I want people to be informed, be warned and be enlightened with the abuses that are happening today. I want people to talk about this, discuss and debate over this film. I want people to be aware and be conscious of these kinds of true events. ”
