Jericho lost to Boyet by one point

Did you know that Jericho Rosales lost by only one point to Christopher de Leon for the best actor trophy in the last Metro Manila Film Festival Awards?

Echo (Jericho’s pet name) was nominated for his performance as a half-Filipino/half-Spanish who sided with the Spaniards during the Baler Siege in 1898 in the movie, "Baler."

Boyet (Christopher) won for his portrayal as a dying man in "Magkaibigan."

In any case, here’s a text message we received from Echo’s talent manager, Angeli Pangilinan-Valenciano, immediately after the awards ceremony at the Softel Hotel last Saturday (Dec. 27):

"After losing by a point to Boyet last night, Echo said God sent him an angel immediately after my son, (Jose Angelo), Gabriel told Echo, who was near tears: ‘Echo, it’s like a basketball game. You didn’t win the MVP but you made a shot and won the championship (‘Baler’ won best picture). And that’s what counts, right?’

"Echo gave me a big hug and said: ‘I’m okay, Tita. God has his reasons. Praise Jesus.’

"For us, Echo will always be the best actor (together with Boyet) of this film, ‘Baler,’ which won all in all 10 awards."

"Baler" is a production of Viva Films and Bida Foundation. It is directed by Mark Meily, based on a story and script by Roy Iglesias.

Direk Mark was named best director, while Roy garnered the best story and best screenplay awards.

Senator Jinggoy Estrada produced "Magkaibigan" for Maverick Films. "Magkaibigan" was inspired by his friendship with the late Rudy Fernandez. Story and direction was by Joey Javier Reyes.

Echo’s leading lady in "Baler," Anne Curtis, who plays a young woman torn between her father, who is the leader of a rebel group, and her love, who serves under the Spanish, won the best actress trophy.

It’s Anne’s first award as an actress and she is just so excited about it. After all, earlier reports had it that Dawn Zulueta would bag the trophy for "Magkaibigan."

"But I’m sharing this award with her," Anne announced happily.

Phillip Salvador, who portrayed Anne’s father, was named best supporting actor.

"This award means a lot to me," Phillip remarked, hugging his trophy. "Ang tagal kong hindi naranasan ito. Ang sarap talaga na nire-recognizeang talent."

Phillip was away from the movie scene for eight years. "Baler" is sort of a comeback movie for him.

"Baler" also got Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Gender Sensitive, and of course, the much-coveted Gatpuno Award trophies.

Going back to Echo, is it true that he’s wooing Karylle?

Karylle, like Echo, is nursing a broken heart. Karylle just broke up from Dingdong Dantes. And Echo, from Heart Evangelista.

While their former loved ones have found themselves new loves, Dingdong with Marian Rivera and Heart Evangelista with non-showbiz Federico Delgado, Karylle and Echo have, to date, remained loveless.

Now, both Kapamilya (they are together in "ASAP" every Sunday), will Karylle and Echo finally find in each other the true love they are both looking for?
