| Jerichos Star Awards best actor win unexpected![]() Author: Ethel Ramos Jericho Rosales knows that he owes what he describes as his "second chance" at showbiz to the movie, "Baler," Viva Films and Bida Foundations entry in the last Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). The offer to do "Baler," after all, came at a time when his showbiz career was going neither here nor there. Is he glad he accepted the offer? "Baler" not only turned out as an acting piece for Jericho, but it was also a good movie as it won rave reviews from the critics. Small wonder that the film made good at the box office. "I was with the right company as well," Jericho beamed. "I had for my leading lady Anne Curtis, currently the toast of the town among actresses her age. "I had for my director, Mark Meily, and his wife, Ms. Lee, for cinematographer. "At lahat ng mga co-stars ko, maituturing kong the best in the field: Phillip Salvador, Joel Torre, Leo Martinez, Rio Locsin, Michael de Mesa, Baron Geisler, Bernard Palanca, Mark Bautista and Carlo Aquino. "Thus, I made sure that I made an impressive performance." * * * At the MMFF Awards Night, Jericho admitted his disappointment when he failed to win the best actor trophy. But he felt happy for Anne, who was adjudged best actress. "Pero, wika nga, nahimasmasan ako when I realized na ang nakatalo naman sa akin ay si Christopher de Leon (who won the best actor trophy for Magkaibigan). "Siguro na-condition ko na ang sarili ko ng sa Empress Awards, natalo naman ako ni Baron (for Jay)," he related. He almost did not go to the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) 25th Star Awards for Movies at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater at the Ateneo University. But several friends from the PMPC insisted that he go. "As I rushed to the stage to claim my trophy for best actor,di ko ma-describe my feeling. Ni di ko na ma-recall ngayon kung anu-ano ang mga sinabi ko in my speech. Basta ang alam ko, I was so overwhelmed," he said. "Baler" also won the best director award for Mark Meily, best cinematography award for Lee Meily, best movie original theme song for "Ngayon, Bukas at Kailanman" (sang by Sarah Geronimo), best original screenplay for Rey Iglesias, best movie sound engineer for Ditoy Aguila and best movie editor of the year for Danny Anonuevo. "Baler" was also named best picture. *** Helen Gamboa doubts if shell be able to leave for the US as planned, to have an aching knee checked up, now that she was told that the original plan to end the series, "Tayong Dalawa," on ABS-CBN and where she plays a pivotal role, in July might not happen. "My God," she howled. "I dont want naman to be unceremoniously killed, if I insist on leaving. Sayang naman ang role ko. It is one of the best that ever happened to me. As an actress, that is." As all "Tayong Dalawa" followers will agree, Helen has one of the most powerful roles in the series. Her role affects the flow of the story. "And I will, of course, not do that," Helen exclaimed. "I owe it to my co-stars to stay put in the series as long as my role is needed. "At nakakahiya kay Charo (Santos-Concio, president of ABS CBN) who convinced me to do the role. "Neither would I want to disappoint my viewers. As it is nga daw, di nila alam whether to hate or admire me for tolerating Ingrid (Agot Isidro) sa kanyang mga ginagawa. To them, I symbolize the mom who unconditionally loves her child and will do anything to keep her happy." Actually, Helen herself admits that she is only one of the many high-caliber talents featured in "Tayong Dalawa." There are, after all, Cherry Pie Picache, who plays Marlene, Alessandra de Rossi, Anita Linda, Mylene Dizon, Jiro Manio, Coco Martin, Gina Pareño, Agot Isidro, Jodi Santamaria and Spanky Manikah. Do you know that in the almost four decades that Helen has been in showbiz, this is the first time that she is working with these actors? "Tayong Dalawa" is co-directed by Ruel Bayani and Tina Dayrit and stars three of the most-sought artists of today, Kim Chiu, Jake Cuenca and Gerald Anderson. Source: Malaya |
