Jolina wants to try offbeat role, indie movie

Jolina Magdangal was featured in "The Story of Your Life" segment of "Showbiz Central." Her family, co-stars and fans all praised Jolinas positive traits, including her fine business sense. Friends Roselle Nava and Kyla say shes very thoughtful, the type who remembers birthdays, sends gifts, and writes letters to friends. Shes often seen as bubbly and talkative but she reveals that shes actually very shy. "Mahiyain ako so I cover it up by talking a lot," she adds.

At this point in her career, she wants to try offbeat roles. "Like yung akala mo, sweet, pero killer pala. I also want to try to do an indie movie, even a character role."

She cried so hard when her dear dog of eight years, Cosmo, passed away, so "Showbiz Central" gave her a new puppy and she was so happy about it that she cried again. Jolina admits someone is making her happy anew after her breakup with Atty. Bebong Munoz. This is Rivermaya drummer Mark Escueta. He visits her at her home in a traditional kind of courtship where he brings her gifts like ice cream (her favorite) or flowers. Her family likes him as hes courteous and respectful. Mark lives in Parañaque while she lives in Commonwealth Ave., Quezon City so their houses are really so far from each other. "Pero talagang basta madadalaw niya ako, dadalawin niya ako kahit malayo," she says. "Hindi lang siya nakakapunta kapag may gig sila or busy siya, like ngayon, may recording sila."

Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal admit they did some daring scenes in "Ill Be Waiting For You" simply because their director is Maryo de los Reyes, who megged them in their hit show, "Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin."

"Pati nga sa pictorial, nagpa-sexy kami," says Aljur. "I really got conscious kasi hindi ako handa. I brought boxer shorts lang, but they wanted me to wear something more skimpy so briefs lang ang suot ko. But we trusted Direk Maryo at launching movie namin ito so we have to follow him."

Did he feel hot when he saw Kris wearing her two-piece bikini? "I stared at her nang matagal. Na-conscious siya. Naasar, pero maganda talaga ang katawan niya, ha. She doesnt think of herself as sexy, but she is."

We notice they call each other "Bebs." Does it mean theyre each others baby? "Term of endearment lang, pero kapag galit kami sa isat isa, we still use each others names."

So whats their status?

"We take good care of each other. And we take care of our love team."

Aljur wants to thank all those who watch their soap, "All My Life." Romano (Zoren Legaspi) tries everything to separate Jules (Aljur) from Romina (Kris) who have admitted to Perry (Paolo Avelino) that theyre going steady. Romano mauls Jules and he ends up in the hospital. Romina apologizes for her dad and is shocked when Marita (Lani Mercado) tells her to ask her Aunt Sally (Manilyn Reynes) who her real mother is. Sally admits to Romina that she is her real mom and not Amelia (Gelli de Belen.) Romano warns Gary (Jay Manalo) that hell beat up Jules again if he wont stay away from Romina. They will fight but Romina and Jules will arrive. They want to know why they, the kids, should pay for the sins of their parents. Gary tells Jules that the late Luke is his half-brother because Gary is Lukes real dad, not Romano. Romina sees Romano kissing the nurse Dessa and tries to slap Dessa but its she who gets slapped by Romano. Romina runs away with Jules. Dessa starts acting like shes now the wife of Romano. She continues to oppress Amelia. Romano sues Jules for allegedly kidnapping Romina.

Cesar Montano celebrated his birthday last Aug. 1 with a special presentation in "The Singing Bee" where the guest were his family members, former classmates, friends and co-stars in the movies and TV shows he did. His birhtday episode rated very high. He then flew to Bohol to be with his future constituents. "Its my most memorable birthday ever," he says.

This Saturday, his special guests in "Singing Bee" are luscious ABS nymphets Princess Ryan, Nina Dolina and Empress Schuck; contravida like Tirso Cruz III, Dimples Romana and Justin Cuyugan; sing-along singer-emcees K Brosas, Vice Ganda and Anton Diva; teen stars Aldred Gatchalian, Bettina Carlos and John James Uy; plus Pinoy Fear Factors Manuel Chua, PBBs Diane Monsanto and comedian Cacai.

"Starstruck 2" winner Ryza Cenon is happy to be part of GMA-7s primetime show, "Rosalinda," where she plays title-roler Carla Abellanas half sister. Hows it working with the Carla and Geoff Eigenmann love team? "Theyre both easy to work with," she says. "And Im glad dahil ang dami na nilang fans."

Is it true shes now going steady with a dancer who belongs to an all-male dance group? "I heard about it at ang balita raw nagli-live in na kami. Dine-dedma ko na lang as its not true. Ayokong magpa-apekto. Wala akong boyfriend. Taping lang ako sa Rosalinda, Sundays nasa SOP ako, then I just stay home. Iniiwasan ko na ngang maintriga pa, pero hayan at meron pa rin."

Oyo Sotto is ecstatic that his horror-comedy show on TV 5, "Midnight DJ," is gaining more and more viewers to give its rivals tough competition in its time slot on Saturdays. "I think viewers dig the way that the frightening stories are told in a hilarious and funky manner," he says. "Im told sa AGB Mega-Manila ratings, we now hit a 26% individual audience share. I also want to thank my regular co-stars, Desiree del Valle, Jenny Miller and Joaqui Tupas, with newcomers Meg Imperial and Sam Pinto, kasi team effort ito and we all contribute something for the success of the show. For our new episode, Gayuma ng Pangit, we have rapper comedian Andrew E. as a guy who puts a spell on women. Once they fall for him,pumapangit silang lahat. Our other guests are Sexbomb Aira Bermudez and Don Umali."

"Midnight DJ" is shown at 8 p.m. after Oyos dad, Vic Sotto, in "Who Wants to be a Millionaire." TV 5 also has a new teen show on Sundays at 4:30 p.m., "Goals and Girls" or G&G. They borrowed ABS-CBN talents Empress Schuck and Dino Imperial for the show, but theyre not paired together. Empress is paired with newcomer Ryan Julio while Dino is paired with newcomer Nikki Guevarra. Also in the cast are PJ Valerio, Paw Diaz, Tirso Cruz III, Kristel Moreno, Lovely Rivero and Wilma Doesnt.

After directing concerts and TV shows for six years, GB (Giuseppe Bede) Sampedro debuted as a film director in "Astig" and won the Cinemalaya best director award for his very first try. "Astig" got the most number of awards as it also won best supporting actor for Arnold Reyes, best editing and best sound. Despite this, "Last Supper No.3" won as best picture when it didnt win any other trophy. How does he feel about this?

"Okay lang," GB says. "We already won four awards sosobrang blessing na yun for us, okay na even if were not the best picture. Thank you na rin for all our awards. I saw Last Supper at nagandahan ako. Deserving sila. I also enjoyed Colorum and Dinig Sana Kita."

How does he feel about what director Jim Libiran ("Tribu") somewhat belittling "Astig"?

"Ayoko maapektuhan as everyone is entitled to his own opinion. He said vanilla ice cream ang movie ko, I respect that. I dont expect to get everyones approval. Kanya-kanyang opinionlang yan."

"Astig" is about four young men who all try to survive the sordid life in the city. Did the film come out on screen the way he envisioned it? "Yes. Kasi bawat sequence ko, naka-storyboard, I didnt want to leave anything to chance."

How about the exterior scenes shot in busy areas like Quiapo, Recto and Arranque?

"Theyre all difficult to shoot, especially with Dennis Trillo as hes very popular and its difficult to control the crowd. But I want to thank all the barangay tanod who help us in the crowd scenes, some of which were stolen shots, like the scene where Sid Lucero mauled Dennis at the steps of the Quiapo Underpass for deflowering his sister Glaiza de Castro."

"Astig" will be shown at the New Currents section of the Pusan International Filmfest in Korea from October 8 to 16. It will also be shown at the Asiatica Film Mediale in Rome. GB wants to direct another movie before the year is over. Right now, hes also directing the daily morning show, "Ruffa and Ai" on ABS-CBN and the concert of Toni Gonzaga in October.
