Juday-Alfie feud, gimmick?

Author: Joey Aquino
Column: Just Asking

THE talent-manager relationship of Judy Ann Santos and Alfie Lorenzo is one of the strongest and most admired in showbiz.

But recently, the two had a rift; but their differences have already been patched up – so they claim. Their issue was about Juday’s contract. What irked Alfie was Juday’s decision to consult a lawyer first before signing the contract. He claimed that in the past 19 years it was only the two of them who signed the contract sans the help of a lawyer. Juday, on the other hand, reasoned out that she was just making sure that she would not get embroiled in another legal issue.

“Nineteen years ago wala naman ako lawyer,” Juday sarcastically said in her interview on The Buzz last Sunday. “Kaya nga ako nagkaroon ng kaso sa BIR. Di ba?!”

With her stature and earnings, Juday should really seek legal opinion before she enters into any contract. Such move is not a question on her sense of gratitude to her long-time manager. Unfortunately, Alfie treated it the other way.

Alfie has proven to all what he made out of Juday. So, it is understandable that he reacted that way. Maybe, he felt insulted because Juday did not tell him that she would be consulting a lawyer.

The talent-manager relationship should be devoid of surprises to last long. Just like in a family, when one member does something without the other members knowing they will be hurt when they find out about it – especially if it is something that needs to be discussed. ‘Di ba parang nawawala ang tiwala ‘pag ganoon ang ginagawa natin?

But what is this I heard from one showbiz writer that this was just a pure gimik? Is this true? Just asking…

WHO’S THE CULPRIT?

ANOTHER talent manager being accused of doing gimik at the expense of her assistant is Becky Aguila.

Becky’s talents Jennylyn Mercado, Joross Gamboa and Valerie Concepcion said in separate interviews that they were all allegedly victimized by handler Rowena “Mel” Pulmano. Let’s not get into details on how this certain Mel allegedly tampered with and forged signature to stash away money from them as these were already reported.

But what prompted me to comment on this is the nature of this issue. It’s really for the books. Imagine, as it has been said, Mel got around P3million from Jennylyn alone. Whew! That’s big money. And Jennylyn had not even noticed that she was already losing such amount? Is she that rich and busy for her not to check her bank account?! That’s unbelievable.

“Naku tigilan nga nila ako,” comments my writer-friend. “Imposible naman ‘yon na ‘di niya nalalaman na nababawasan ang pera niya sa bangko. Lalo ngayon na wala siyang project dahil sa panganganak niya. As if naman ‘di alam sa showbiz na kaya nga ibinenta nila ‘yong bahay nila sa Las Piñas para may panggastos sila habang walang raket. At isa pa, ‘makakalusot ba ‘yan kay Becky na tinaguriang money-ger. ”

Whew, again!

Meanwhile, Becky is reportedly filing a case against Mel. And the latter will reveal dark secrets of Becky and her talents as part of her retaliation. As they say, the plot thickens.

But others say that this was another gimmick of Becky. Or, as some kibitzers say, is it true that Becky made Mel a scapegoat for her wrong doings? Just asking…

Cristy Fermin, VICTIM OF HER OWN DOING

The suspension of ABS-CBN on showbiz columnist/ host Cristy Fermin has sent shivers down the spine among local showbiz people.

As per ABS-CBN’s official statement, “the act committed by Ms. Fermin brought her and The Buzz to public disrepute, jeopardizing the name and goodwill of both the show and the network. ”

No doubt, Cristy has contributed a lot and raked in money for the network. But, with one mistake, all these were forgotten. She could also be blamed for this because she in a way abused her power. As they say, there’s no such thing as absolute freedom – even in freedom of speech, for that matter.

Maybe, Cristy was just doing her job and she was made to believe that she has all the backings of the networks’s bigwigs.

“‘Yon ang mali ni Cristy,” says one of my coffee buddies. “Naging masyado siyang kampante. Hayan tuloy nagisa siya sa sariling niyang mantika. ”

Whatever the real score, ABS-CBN and Cristy both know where they are coming from. And it only proves one thing: That in showbiz – business prevails.

Meanwhile, this writer sincerely hopes that Cristy will get over this incident – the soonest possible time. And when her suspension is lifted in January, will Cristy start her brand new year with GMA? Just asking…
