KC has no problem with John Lloyd

Richard Gutierrez and KC Concepcion were busy promoting their movie "For the First Time" in all showbiz talk shows last weekend. We notice they guested in GMA-7 shows first, "Startalk" and "Showbiz Central," then they transferred to its rival shows on ABS-CBN, "Entertainment Live" and "The Buzz." In all their live interviews, the fact that they’re both Mr. Nice Guy and Ms. Nice Gal always shines through. Both also have sunshiny, easy-to-like personalities.

KC made it clear she did not insist on having Richard as her first leading man after rejecting John Lloyd Cruz, who once had a relationship with her aunt Ciara Sotto (cousin of her mom, Sharon Cuneta) that turned sour.

"Walang offer sa’kin to work with John Lloyd at all and the truth is I’d really like to work with him someday," she says. "I have no reason para magalit sa kanya. Labas naman ako doon sa nangyari sa kanila noon ni Ciara. I even watch his TV shows and movies."

Despite their sweetness to each other, both KC and Chard insist they’re not yet on. "I really feel uncomfortable kapag pinipilit kaming umamin, e wala pa naman kaming aaaminin," she says. "I really hope they will give us more time kasi ayaw rin naming madaliin at baka sabihin pang ginagamit namin ‘yun just to promote our movie. I’m really more at easena friends muna kami."

After this, she’s moving to GMA Films for their Valentine movie. How does she feel about it?

"Siempre, I’m very much excited. Noon, si Chardang nagpunta sa ABS. Now, it’s my turn to go to GMA. ‘For the First Time’ is a light romantic drama. Sa GMA naman, we’re going to do more of a romantic comedy."

Sunshine Dizon got a big surprise from her mom Dorothy. She knows they have a lot in Antipolo but what she doesn’t know is that her mom has already constructed a beautiful native resthouse there for her. She was so happy when her mom took her there and the bamboo and nipa resthouse was already finished.

"Naging masasakitin kasi siya lately kaya this is good for her para makapag-rest siya nang husto when she has no work," says Dorothy.

Earlier, there were reports that they’re having financial problems but this proves the rumors weren’t true. "Natatawa nga ako dahil nagsanla daw ako ng mga alahas at binenta pati bahay namin, hindi naman totoo."

Sunshine is mum about her lovelife but it’s her mom who confirmed that she has broken up with businessman Jojo Manlongat. Dorothy obviously doesn’t approve of Jojo (who has a daughter with Angelu de Leon) for Sunshine. It’s said that the real reason Sunshine got sick and was confined in the hospital for about a month was because she got so depressed after her breakup with Jojo.

Beth Tamayo is turning 30 but she looks so young and pretty she can still pass for a teener, like in her role as Tessie Tomas’ daughter in "Ploning." This is why she’s not totally credible as the mother of Empress Schuck in a recent episode of "Your Song." Now managed by Annabelle Rama, she plays a role much closer to her age in the TV adaptation of "Have Baby Will Date," a hit chick lit novel that will be seen for four weeks on "Love Books," TV-5’s special showcase of love stories for the hopeless romantics based on best selling novels.

"I play the role of Valerie Concepcion’s best friend and I act like her conscience whenever she’s making an important decision," she says. "Pero very light ito at comedy ang approach. Asawa ko rito si Bobby Andrews at si Valerie naman is paired with TJ Trinidad. Single mom dito si Valerie, with a demanding career and a baby girl who takes much of ther time. Maraming matutuhan dito ang viewers on how to cope with single parenthood."

In real life, Beth also wants to become a mother soon. "My husband Johnny has two kids from his previous marriage, aged 9 and 12. I get along fine with my stepkids pero siempre, gusto rin naming magkaroon ng sarili naming anak."

She wants to make it clear that she did not snatch her husband from his first wife. "Matagal na silang divorced when we met. Married na rin to an American ang wife niya and they have their own daughter. Kami ni Johnny are close to his ex-wife and her husband. We even traveled together to Korea to spend the New Year at noong nandito sila, ako pa ang nag-babysit sa anak nila so they can go out together nang sila lang. They’re based in Guam and when I go there, they even fetch me at the airport. I feel so blessed kasi I’m also very close to my stepkids. Sabi pa nga nila sa dad nila, if ever maghiwalay kami, sa’kin daw sila sasama."

Her hubby is so rich; why does she still have to work?

"I love acting at gusto ko rin ng may ginagawa. Alangan namang magmukmok na lang ako sa bahay. And I love it when I get good projects, like itong ‘Love Books’."

"Love Books" is shown on Tuesdays, 7 p.m., on TV-5, directed by Mark Reyes, with replays on Sunday at 12 noon.

There have been many films about mothers, like Almodovar’s "All ABout My Mother," "Mother" with Debbie Reynolds and "Monster-in-Law" with Jane Fonda. Now is the turn of Diane Keaton in "Smother," in a role that somewhat recalls the one she played in "Because I Said So." As Marilyn, the object of her smothering is her son, Noah (Dax Shepard). A lot of people worry about their mom’s eventual passing away, but in his case, he reveals that his fear is his mom might live forever. His fear is justified because Marilyn is any child’s worst nightmare. She is the kind of meddlesome mom who won’t hesitate to give her opinion about anything and everything.

When his mom shows up, Noah has just been fired from his job as sports therapist and goes home to seek The Company of his wife, Clare (Liv Tyler), a teacher. But a cousin of Clare, Myron (Mike White), a jobless scriptwriter, has also just moved in as an unwanted houseguest. Things get from bad to worse when his mom also shows up to stay with them after leaving his dad, Gene (Ken Howard).

It’s Halloween so Diane Keaton as Marilyn shows up garbed like a pumpkin with her five dogs in tow. That’s how Noah’s life becomes more stressful: he has to find a new job, deal with his overbearing mom who doesn’t want to leave them, and also please his wife who already wants them to start their own family and have a baby.

The movie is full of crazy comic situations that may not work all the time but it still provides enough laughs as well as some good insights about mother-and-son relationships. As the title roler, Keaton is obviously having fun and makes sure all stops are pulled for her to be totally credible as the intrusive, smothering mom who can also honestly be quite annoying. She actually puts her son on a humiliating spot even if she acts with the best of intentions, following him in his day-to-day activities, knocking on his bedroom even late at night, and pressuring him to act as mediator in her fights with his dad who’d rather just sit and repeatedly watch an old war flick. Keaton succeeds in making her Marilyn truly a nutty fruitcake but, in a way, also quite sympathetic as she holds on to her only son who she believes in the only consolation she got in life, where she has little else to appreciate.

Shepard doesn’t have much of a screen charisma as the immature son, but to balance things up with Keaton’s more flamboyant portrayal, he wisely chooses to go more low-key in his approach to his role as the traumatized son and manages to make his character quite likeable. Liv Tyler is also good as the loving and supportive wife. She’s also quite sexy as the wife who puts on sexy underwear and rose petals on their bed to be seductive to her husband as she desperately wants to have a baby soon.

Throw in some toilet humor and some sexual humor and all in all, what we have is a contemporary romantic comedy that is meant to be a crowd pleaser.
