This time, it's neither a game nor a scene from a movie nor a piece of juicy showbiz gossip. Actress, "TV game show queen" and former showbiz talk show host Kris Aquino revealed on Monday that her mother, former Philippine president Corazon Aquino, has been diagnosed with colon cancer.

"Korina this is a statement we all prepared together. And this is coming from our family. Our mother had suffered from an episode of high blood pressure and difficulty in breathing followed by fever during the week in between Christmas and New Year.

"Since that time we all became concerned because of her persistent cough loss of appetite and her noticeable weight loss. Our mom wanted to know what was wrong with her and with her family by her side. She submitted herself to a checkup and several tests. The result show that our mother is suffering from cancer of the colon.

"Our mother has always believed in being upfront over and above everything else she is a woman who has lived her entire life entrusting to the lord and she has always been a woman of great faith," Kris told ABS-CBN News chief correspondent Korina Sanchez in an exclusive interview.

Kris, who made headlines in the past because of her troubled relationships, is asking the public to pray for her mother, whom she described as being always there to support, protect and love her.

"It's very difficult time for our family most especially our mother. We respectfully asked that she be accorded her privacy. Aquino read in a statement that her mother remains a believer in the power of prayer. The Aquino family is now asking for compassion and for prayers for ther mom's recovery," Kris pleaded. Sen. Benigno Aquino, III was at her side as she read their family's official statement.

According to the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, colorectal cancer (also known as colon cancer or large bowel cancer) includes cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and appendix. It is the third most common form of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the Western world.

It adds that that colorectal cancers are thought to arise from adenomatous polyps in the colon. These mushroom-like growths are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy. Therapy is usually through surgery, which in many cases is followed by chemotherapy.
