Makabayang Duktor needs a new home

Since Solar Entertainment took over RPN Channel 9, Drs. Willie and Liza Ong lost their timeslot for their laudable public service show Makabayang Duktor. The show is a squatter now, trying very hard to squeeze itself in Cheryl Cosims Salamat Dok every Saturday and Sunday.

A brainchild of Boy Abunda, Makabayang Duktor treated some 90 indigent patients for free in every show. Drs. Willia and Liza told them to pray that the show be self-sustaining. The answer came when Biomedis general manager Dante Sibug of United Laboratories made them endorsers for Vitahart. Will it be Betty La Bea?

Bea Alonso is still leading in Yehey! Entertainments poll with an amazing 88 percent of the votes as to who should do the role of Betty La Fea in the ABS-CBN remake of the ugly lady with a golden heart (as of 10 a.m. today, Sunday). Anne Curtis is still at second place with 5 percent. This makes Bea the number one contender. Even Regine Velasquez, who originally wanted to move from GMA to ABS-CBN to be able to cast for the role, has a measly 1 percent of the votes. Others are 2 percent each for Angel Locsin and Valerie Concepcion, 1 percent for Judy Ann Santos and zero for Claudine Barretto. A total of 3,312 votes have been cast. It looks like its going to be Betty La Bea! BTW, Wenn Deramas has been tapped as director of the Pinoy version of Betty La Fea.

Jay Duriass new career as SBX host

Where can you talk to The Dawns Jett Pangan, Nyoy Volantes Nyoy Volante and South Borders Jay Durias together but in the press conference of their show, SBX Super Barkadahan Exclusive (Studio 23, Friday, p.m.)? The show is, of course, music-oriented, with segments Cno Ba U?, Band Talk, Lets Groove!and Guez Hu? show is prby Dong Callaos Etcetera Productions, and Jett, Nyoy and Jay host for the first time. Jay tells Buzzstation its like to be a newbie host.

Except for Jay, most of the South Border crew are living in the US. The band stayed there one-and-a half years for a recording deal with an indie label, which went pffft. They decided to apply for a green card for having extraordinary talents and got it. Jay found living there is not for him. Besides, his wife and children dont want to live there. Jay says, The Philippines is my comfort zone and this is where Ill live. But this does not mean the band had split. They are still together. Theyre currently doing an album and members are planning to do a reunion show this year with all of the past members like Luke Mijares and Duncan Ramos.

Jay had second thoughts about joining SBX? He asked their manager what hes going to do in the show. When she explained its a good career move, he agreed. As a newbie host, he did not get too jittery. Jett and Nyoy are his friends so he had it easy. He adds, I just thought, follow Jett and Id be okay. But this does not mean hes branching out in showbiz. Theres no forthcoming soap opera for him. Whats the most outrageous thing hes done for the show? He answers, Dance. Mocha taught Jett and I how to gyrate the Mocha way. I was so embarrassed. His dream guest besides Gary Valenciano are visiting foreign artists.

Christine hits a snag

Christine Reyes is the new endorser of Fiona Footwear. She signed a two-year contract with Hoc Yan International Trading Co. Ltd. yesterday as arranged by elder sister Ara Mina. This gave Buzzstationthe chance to clear up with her the ABS-CBN transfer issue. She confirmed the details earlier published in this column. She added its with the lawyers now, settling for an amicable settlement with GMA if possible. This also confirms that ABS-CBN is avoiding another court case as reported in the same report. Since she cannot sign up, the television remake of Eva Fonda, 16, in which she was supposed to star, has been shelved for the time being. Supahpapalicious has minute-by-minute laughter

I watched Star Cinemas My Big Love last Saturday night and Im pleased with what I saw. What caught my attention was the teaser of Supahpapalicious before the screening. Viewers were laughing in most of the scenes, amused by lead actor Vhong Navarro. During the movies media launch, Buzz editor-in-chief Benjie Felipe projected that Supahpapalicious will be a hit. With what I experienced during the My Big Love screening, I could only bow to the statement.

About the spurned lover Adonis (Vhong) courting single mom Athena (Valerie Concepcion), who has a son, Along (Makisig Morales), the teaser shows Vhong transforming into a gorgeous woman, a spunky lola and a wacky Black American to be able to win the mommys heart. It will start to screen on Black Saturday, March 22, which as we all know was pioneered by Star Cinema as a viable opening date for post-Holy Week observation. Pokwang, Baron Geisler, Kitkat, Empoy and Mura help Vhong deliver the laughter.

A biased comparison Valerie

Anti-Angel Locsin entertainment writers are hitting her another time. They do so every chance they get. Now shes being pitted against Valerie Concepcion, who, as we all know, used to be a GMA talent like Angel. Thats what Angel gets from being her own woman. She will make a movie with Star Cinema in due time. Its just that she has an ongoing teleserye now and she does not have time to shoot a movie right now.
