I have walked this long avenue and remember when people preferred the komiks more than radio and even television, when every street corner had long benches of komiks readers who made komiks rentals a viable livelihood.

The world of Darna and Valentina, Bondying and Kenkoy, Dyesebel and Zuma, and jeepney drivers being sweet lovers. Soon the world of Alupihang Dagat and Totoy Bato and Panday.

In the world of Pablo Gomez, Clodualdo del Mundo and Jim Fernandez, with FrANCisco Coching, Mars Ravelo with his immortal Darna, Dyesebel, Bondying and Maruja, Mars Ravelo was King. Later with Carlo J. Caparas, the security guard-turned-writer, the most prolific of them writing as many as 40 komiks serials at a time in a big komiks chain of the 70s and the 80s, a new kingdom was born and Carlo J. Caparas went further.

Beyond the writing and his imagination to make his tales into films and his own form of reality.

Even the prolific Carlo admits that his Panday is the most popular. Simply because it went beyond the komiks books into film and the screen. Now, he recalls that it was Susan Roces one evening in the late 1970s who suggested the Panday serial to husband Fernando Poe Jr. as movie material.

From 1979 to 1998, Carlo recalls, FPJ made four Panday movies.

Carlo the creator of Panday, the father of Panday and to most, the brains behind Panday in komiks and cinema is the first one to admit:

"Ginawa ni FPJ isang legend ang Panday dahil legendary rin siya. Napalaki niya ang karakter at ang istorya sa pelikula, sa komiks. Si FPJ, pati ako napalaki niya. Ginawa niya ang Panday larger than life. Sa loob ng tatlong dekada. Hindi lang mga box office hits ang mga Panday films. Hanggang ngayon buhay ang karakter, ang image ng Panday sa ating lahat. At maganda ang image matapang, tapat, mapagmahal at matulungin."

Ngayon na wala na si FPJ, is there still Panday?

ABS-CBN picks up the Panday legend to bring it to television just as the FPJ-Caparastandem brought it successful to the big screen more than three decades ago.

How is it?

More than a year of planning, location hunting, preparation and filming in the Ilocos and Bohol (Chocolate Hills, man-made forests, hanging bridge) plus post production goes into the making of Panday circa 2005 for television.

ABS-CBN calls its new Panday as "action-fantaserye."

Donna Villa of the Carlo-Donna tandem calls it a "sineserye" or as the director of the new Panday, Toto Natividad "a movie spectacular for television."

As expected, the ABS-CBN bosses have glowing words for the work of directors Toto Natividad and Rechie del Carmen. The budget was perhaps an early stumbling black and Totos filming style rather than ordinary taping was an earlier issue too.

But as the airing of the new Panday nears most probably next month impressive trailers are seen on television, even in theaters along with the trailers of Dubai.

Just as Carlo was instrumental to the tapping of Toto as first director of Panday, ABS-CBNs choice of Jericho Rosales met approval from the Panday creator.

As Carlo himself puts it: "Nabigyan ako ng break noon ni FPJ bilang writer at director. Nagbibigay rin siya ng break sa mga baguhan. Magandang anino niya si Jericho as Panday. Sa mga artista ngayon, di ba si Jericho lang ang nagsasabi na gusto niyang maging Panday."

According to Direk Toto, "magandang galaw niya, ang katawan, athletic siya at madaling turuan. One month ang pag-aaral niya ng martial arts, routine at wu shu. Dagdag pa rito, magaling siyang umarte. Malalim siyang aktor at very intense. Naalaala ko sina Buboy (Cesar Montano) at Ipe (Phillip Salvador) kay Jericho.

And how is the new Panday to its creator?

Carlo J. Caparas is most impressed.

"Hindi ko inaasahan na ganitong kalaki ang bagong Panday," says Carlo. "Talagang malaki ang magnitude nito. Ang galing, mahusay at maganda. Kapuri-puri ang costumes, ang action scenes, pati na ang mga kabayo. To think na bagong dugo ang gumawa nito, ang gumaganap.

"Dapat palakpakan natin sina Toto at Rechie"

Donna Villa, producer of most of Carlos films lately (together they have Krusada Kalaban ng Krimen (KKK) and Diyos Ko, Mahal Mo Ba Ako on ANC was equally impressed.

She jokes that husband Carlo never allowed her to produce a Panday picture "dahil matipid akong producer."

The new Panday impresses Donna: "Malalaki ang mga eksena. Maganda ang mga fight scenes, exciting. Pati scoring, ang galing. Nakakabilib ang mga outdoor scenes dito, pati ang mga costumes at props at mga kabayo. This looks more expensive than a movie. Alam ko dahil producer ako. Dapat tawagin ito na sineserye dahil isang series of movies on TV ito."

Even Carlo predicts that the series will stay long on TV, probably in cinema later. "Kaya sinasabi ko kay Jericho na huwag muna sasali sa pulitika. Baka mawawala siya, gaya ni FPJ."
