| | Matt Giraud is the first person "saved" in American Idol Author: Lyn Montealegre "Songs of the Cinema" or "Movie Greats" was the theme in the latest performance night of American Idol Season 8. The remaining seven hopefuls had the chance to be mentored under the watchful eyes and "baton" of renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino.
This episode was particularly historical since AI judges Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Kara DioGuardi exercised their right to "save" one Idol hopeful from being eliminated.
Chic rocker Allison Iraheta started off by singing "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing". Paula admiringly commented, "You possess the same special 'sauce' that he [Adam] has. Authentic. You don't compromise that authenticity. You're a talented young lady." Simon thoughtfully added "You are the girls' only hope left in the competition- I really genuinely do....We could see you to the end now."
A soulful Anoop Desai was next in line with a Bryan Adams' classic "Everything I do, I do it for You."
Randy said "Dude, You have definitely found your zone." Kara thought "You definitely found your place - pop songs and adding soul to it. Probably one of his best [performances].You made these changes in the melody. They were coming from the heart. I felt connected. You did a good job."
Adam Lambert blew the house away with his take on "Born to be Wild." Paula gushed: "Adam, you dare to dance the way of greatness. You're one of the bravest contestants I've ever witnessed." On the other hand, Simon quipped "Vocally, incredible. The downside, it was like watching The Rocky Horror Show.
"Have You Ever Loved a Woman" was the song choice of Matt Giraud and it didn't impress the judges. Randy noted "For me, it was interesting. It wasn't one of your best performances. Kara, who was also disappointed with the performance, commented: "you took away the melody that made the song fantastic."
An emotional Danny Gokey sang his heart out with "Endless Love." Paula was quick to note "Your magic is in the timbre of your voice. That was a beautiful, beautiful rendition." For Simon, he was "slightly disappointed. You're emotional. I congratulate you for that."
Kris Allen's "Falling Slowly" act has different opinions from Randy and Kara. Randy mentioned "Dude for me, I don't know. It didn't catch on for me." And for Kara, she thought it was "one of this best. Difficult to pick an obscure song." Lil Rounds' rendition on "The Rose" has mixed reviews too. Paula stated "You could have not sung a more beautiful lyric, one of the most beautiful songs." For Simon, he sharply commented "You're getting it completely wrong. This song is too soft. Too middle of the road. You have some nice moments. I'm getting frustrated."
Elimination night was shown the next day. Special guest performers giving luster to the show were Jennifer Hudson of Season 3 and lovely teen "Hannah Montana" sensation Miley Cyrus. Named in the bottom three were Anoop Desai, Lil Rounds and Matt Giraud.
Lil and Anoop are safe for another week but the lowest viewer votes went to Matt. Judges make history by using the "Judges Save" privilege. Matt is still qualified to be part of AI Season 8. However, there is a big consequence that comes with the "Judges Save" card because next week, 2 contestants will be sent home.
Witness the top 7 composed of Lil, Anoop, Danny, Kris, Allison, Adam and Matt outdo each other with their personal take on the "Disco" theme this week.
