Veteran actress Nova Villa said she is thrilled about her newest project, the full length-animated film "Dayo."

"I really enjoyed it. Sabi ko naiiba para silang Angelina Jolie. Iyong mga pelikulang cartoon, 'yong mga animation sa abroad, 'yong mga boses lang ng mga Hollywood stars, pati sa atin ay mayroon na. So, tuwang-tuwa ako na ako ay mapasama," Villa said.

The actress said that she readily accepted the project when it was offered to her because of the storyline's "uniqueness."

"Parang lately ko na nga lang nalaman na animated so I'm very happy," she said.

In the movie, Villa has lent her voice to Lola Nita, the grandmother of the lead character Bubuy (Nash Aguas).

"Ang character ko dito is supposed to be a 75-year-old woman na medyo mataba na mahal na mahal ang apo niya at ang asawa niya. So, binase ko ang boses ko at ninamnam ko ang edad na 75 na isang mataba... noong maramdaman ko na nakapasok na sa akin 'yong ganoong character, ilalabas mo naman ngayon sa boses, ipo-portray mo sa pamamagitan ng boses," she said.

The comedianne said she could relate to her character, pointing out that Lola Nita is very funny.

"May pagkakahawig (sa akin) because may pagka-komedyante (si Lola Nita) so 'yong humor nandoon pero boses matanda," she said.

Dayo is a story of 11-year-old Bubuy who is out to save his abducted grandparents in the land of "Elementalia," a magical and mystical world where many of the Philippines' mythical creatures and enchanted elements lives.

Along the way, Buboy meets Anna (Katrina Legaspi), a teen manananggal (a female mythical creature who, after sunset, can split her upper body from her lower extremities. She can fly with her bat-like wings and she preys on humans).

Anna befriends and helps Bubuy find and rescue his beloved grandparents.

Aside from Villa, the film also features the voices of Noel Trinidad, Pocholo Gonzalez, Gabe Mercado, Pokwang, Johnny Delgado, Michael V. and Peque Gallaga.

Directed by Robert Quilao, Dayo is the official entry of Cutting Edge Productions to this year's Metro Manila Film Festival.

It will be shown beginning December 25.

Music

Dayo is also poised to establish a deeper connection with moviegoers through its music.

World-renowned performer Lea Salonga sang the movie's theme song, "Lipad," which was recorded together with FILharmoniKa orchestra under the baton of brother Gerard Salonga.

"Lipad is a song about believing in dreams and making them come true," said
Jessie Lasaten, a multi-awarded film music composer and executive producer of Dayo.

Lasaten collaborated with Temi Abad Jr. in writing the lyrics.

Aside from Salonga's inspirational version, upcoming band "Roots of Nature" sang an upbeat version of Lipad, which is currently being played on the airwaves.

Meanwhile, Moymoy Palaboy sang "Kapit," a song about friendship, and new band "Juan Lunar" performed "Daybreak," a song about being there for someone.

"We have music that combines full orchestral instrumentation with the ethnic instruments of Joey Ayala... We asked Joey to sing the Elementalia Dayo song as well as have him perform his "hegalong," a two-string lute instrument," Lasaten said.

"He played kubing (jaw harp), kulintang (ethnic gong) and nose flute which added texture to the score in the Elementalia scenes," he added.

He noted that Dayo's original soundtrack also sets it apart from other films,

"I would want the public to know that we can still come up with original instrumental music for orchestra," he said.

Dayo's original soundtrack is now available in stores under Sony BMG.
