| Oyo admits relationship with Kristine![]() Author: Mario E. Bautista Oyo Sotto used to be with GMA-7 starring in TAPEs afternoon soaps, then ABS-CBN got him and he got a number of shows for a while. But since none of them really rated that high (like "May Minamahal," "Pedro Penduko and Engkantao," and "Prinsesa ng Banyera"), the interest of ABS-CBN in him quickly dwindled and he has not been visible for six months now. No wonder he quickly accepted the offer of TV 5 to replace Paolo Contis as the lead in "Midnight DJ," now to be seen every Saturday. "Its nice to be working again," he says. "Bukod dito, kasama rin ako sa Iskul Bukol, 20 Years After, na entry ng Tito, Vic and Joey sa Metro filmfest." Hows his relationship with Kristine Hermosa? "Were dating pa rin. Mas malalim kaysa best friends, but no full-time commitment and we prefer it that way. Siya lang ang laging kasama ko, wala ng iba, pero wala kaming rules like sa mag-boyfriend-girlfriendkasi doon nagsisimula ang selosan at mga away. We know mahal namin ang isat isa, bahala na lang kung saan kami dadalhin nito later." What can he say now that Kristine is about to be paired with ex-boyfriend Jericho Rosales in a new soap? "Thats just okay. Ang totoo nga niyan, nag-tape na sila ng isang episode ng Maalaala Mo Kaya. Trabaho lang naman yun. Marami pa ring nakaka-miss at sumusuporta sa love team nila na talaga namang nag-hit noong Pangako SaYo days. Maski ako, pinanood ko sila noon." Those close to Oyo say that Kristine had a positive influence on him. "Maraming naging magandang pagbabago kay Oyo dahil kay Kristine," they say. "He no longer smokes or drinks at hindi na rin nagpupuyat. Mas going straight na siya ngayon." *** Wally Bayola still cant believe hes being launched to stardom with partner Jose Manalo in the horror-comedy "Scaregivers." "Kaya scared talaga kami kasi kaming magdadala ng movie at hindi na kami sidekick lang ni Bossing Vic Sotto," he says. Wally was only a year old when his parents split. His dad, a doctor, went to Chicago while his mom entrusted him to a relative whos a priest. "Brother ng lola ko yung pari sa Albay in Bicol na siyang nagpalaki sa akin," he says. "Nasa Grade 2 na ako when I first met my mom. Sabi sakin, nanay mo yan. Ganun lang. Thirty-three years old naman ako when I first met my dad. It was his mom, my lola, who tracked me down at naging kasulatan ko at siya ang pumilit na magkita kami. I grew up as an altar boy. Nag-aral ako ng college sa Naga at doon ako nag-join ng band. Andrew de Real of Library went there to give us a workshop and he asked me kung gusto ko mag-host sa Library. So in 1998, I first went to Manila at naging host-comedian ako sa Library. From there, kinuha ako ni Maam Malou Choa Fagar in 2000 as jester ng audience sa Eat Bulaga. Hindi ko malilimutan yun as its my birthday, May 3, nang kunin nila ako. Tapos sinasali na ko sa Bulagaan. Thats where I met Jose, na nauna sakin dun kasi naging floor director muna siya. One time, may nag-requestng performers na ipapadala mag-show sa Dagupan. Kami ni Jose ang pinapunta with the Sex Bomb. Ako talaga ang kumakanta sopinahiram ko siya ng minus one at binigyan ko ng idea kung anong skits ang gagawin namin. Doon nakitang okay yung team up namin so after that, nag-show na kami sa Zirkoh at Klownz. Napasama na rin ako sa movies like Best Man ni Michael V., Lastikman at Enteng Kabisote ni Bossing Vic, Dobol Trobolnila ni Tito Dolphy at ngayon, solo na kami sa Scaregivers." Hes so good in cross-dressing roles so a lot of people think hes gay. But he was only 22 when he got married to Riza Ruen in Bicol and they have three girls and a boy aged 13, 18, 9 and 3 months old. How do his kids react to his playing gay roles like the popular Arwani? "Aba, kung minsan, ayaw akong seryosohin. Like sa bahay, kapag naglalaro sa labas at pinapapasok ko na, sasabihin, Naku, si Arwani naman." In "Scaregivers," he and Jose play conmen who get arrested. To avoid being jailed, they pretend to be insane and were sent to a mental hospital, which turned out to be haunted so they encounter some ghosts. Supporting them in the movie are Iza Calzado, Paolo Contis, Ehra Madrigal, Ryan Yllana, Edgar Guzman, Boy Abunda, and many other special guests headed by Vic Sotto. It opens November 26. *** One of todays most familiar names in the culinary arts is Heny Sison, who has her own school at 33 Boni Serrano Ave. QC. After hosting "Taste of Life with Heny Sison" on IBC-13 for 7 years, shes now with Q 11 with a new show, "Henys Kitchen." This is a cooking show with a twist as its also a travelogue where the cuisine of various regions will be featured. For the first episode this Saturday, Heny goes to Ilocos Sur to show not only familiar but also new Ilocano dishes. "We cook pinadapang manok with balicucha, sinanglao which is stewed pig innards, and halo-halo with white yam, plus we show how to make their bagoong from scratch and chocolate cake using their tablea," she says. "I chose Ilocos for the pilot as Ive been doing research on it for four years now for my book, Naimas, which is delicious in Ilocano. Theres so much to show in our country. Well also feature Pampango dishes and well cook in such locations as Splendido, Tagaytay Highlands and the Rizal Dairy Farm in Antipolo." Henedina Banzon majored in economics in UP, graduating in 1982. She then worked for the Ministry of Human Settlements, where she met her husband, Benny Sison. It was after she got married that she got fond of cooking, eventually studying at the Wilton School of Cake Decorating and Confectionary in Chicago and the Culinary Institute of America in New York. Later, she would study the dishes of other countries right where they originated. So she studied French cooking in Paris, Mexican cooking in Mexico, Italian cooking in Rome. Did she ever try putting up her own restaurant? "Yes, I had a cafe in Makati but its very taxing to manage it. Id rather cook or teach others how to cook." She has two daughters, Denise, 20, taking up molecular biology, and Carmela, 18, taking up business, both in UP. Do they also cook? "Yes. Im surprised nga as I dont teach them but they know how. By osmosis siguro." Heny is confident "Henys Kitchen" will be different from other cooking shows as her kitchen will be a movable one that will also sell the countrys scenic spots. "Kaya nagkasundo kami agad ng producer ko, Maricar Erese of Medfort Marketing, to feature food finds all over the country and to make it not just a cooking but also a lifestyle show." "Henys Kitchen" starts today, 8:30 to 9 a.m. on Q 11. *** Did you know that Yul Servo beat no less than Hollywood actor Nick Nolte when he won the best actor award in the 35th Brussels International Filmfest on November 9? "Honestly, I wasnt expecting to win kasi magaling talaga si Mr. Nolte in his role as a dying man in the US entry, Off the Black," he says. "But aside from Mr. Nolte, also nominated was Egyptian superstar Nour El Sherif for Baby Doll Night na talagang buong entourage silang dumalo sa filmfest. Theyre also supported by the Egyptian embassy who gave them limousines go to and from the venue. E, kami ni Direk Maryo J. de los Reyes, umaasa lang sa cars provided by the festival mismo. Also, Ive won twice na in Brussels, first was in 2000 for Batang Westside then in 2004, for Naglalayag. E, good luck daw comes in threes kaya heto, nakatatlong best actor award na ako sa kanila. But I was really shaking sa nerbiyos when my name was called. Over all naman, bale 7th best actor award ko na ito kasi nanalo rin ako rito sa award-giving bodies natin for Batang Westside, Laman and Naglalayag." How come hes a favorite in Brussels? "Hindi naman siguro favorite, kasi every year I win, iba-iba yung judges. This time, may mataray na French judgena may pagkasuplado. Dapat nga, judge din si Direk Tikoy Aguiluz, but he didnt make it kaya wala talagang Pinoy sa jurors. Pero later, yung Indonesian critic na member ng juror, si Asmayani Kusrini, ako daw ang unang napili nilang winner sa deliberation nila and its unanimous. It helped that I had two entries shown in the festival, Torotot, where I got nominated as best actor playing the role of a cuckolded husband, and Brutus, where I won the Cinemalaya best supporting actor award as an NPA chief who helps two Mangyan kids. I play two entirely different roles and they said they were impressed with my interpretation of both roles." Yul has just finished a new movie, "Dose," where he makes love to a 12-year-old boy, Fritz Chavez, and the boys aunt, Irma Adlawan. Also starring is Emilio Garcia, directed by Senedy Que. Yul is also seen regularly in GMA-7s primetime series, "La Lola." *** Last Sunday, stand-up comic Erick bested other comedians in "The Singing Bee" and later also defeated Marty, the defending champion who has won more than P100,000.
