PMPC launches 1st music award Author: Boy Villasanta
Column: Entertainment MANILA - After a series of deliberations and consultations with industry leaders, the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) is finally holding its first music awards in October. The 1st Star Awards for Music will be staged on Oct. 29, 2009 at SM Skydome in North Edsa to recognize the outstanding contributions of Filipino artists. To qualify and arm its members of critical acumen about music, a seminar was held under the auspices of three of the country's leading practitioners in the field of music education. They were Prof. Ryan Manal from University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music, prizewinning composer Vehnee Saturno, "Pinoy Dream Academy" voice coach Von Arroyo, and Vince de Jesus, composer and musical director for film and stage. Manal and Saturno, together with Universal Records' publicist and former PMPC president Ernie Pecho, acted as consultants during the screening of the nominees in various categories. They conducted audio screening of CD albums and music videos released between January 2008 and May 2009. To be directed by Louie Ignacio, the first PMPC Star Awards for Music will be jointly produced by the National Press Club (NPC) presided by Benny Antiporda and Alyansa ng Filipinong Mamamahayag (AFIMA) headed by Jerry Yap.
