Sen. Francis Pangilinan has called on hairdressers, beauticians and make-up artists in the country to close ranks in order to boost the local beauty industry.

During his speech at the opening of Cosmetologie '09 at the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City, Pangilinan appealed to set aside intrigues and differences and focus instead on improving the industry.

Pangilinan made the appeal amid the reported disagreement among members of beauty organizations.

Reports said members and officers of the Philippine International Cosmetologists Association (PICA) were at odds with other groups allegedly after the latter criticized PICA's move to hold a "hair show."

"If only these members of the beauty business will unite, they will emerge as winners in the battle of supremacy in the industry in Asia. As a matter of fact, our fellow Filipinos in the beauty and wellness industry aren't enemies to each other to achieve our goals as leaders in the field but our competitors are foreigners," said Pangilinan.

According to him, the leading countries in the beauty industry in Asia are Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand.

The Philippines, he said, can take the lead if Filipino beauticians will unite.

"I believe the Filipino beauty and wellness industry leaders are talented, innovative and creative," he said.

Meanwhile, the senator also thanked Fanny Serrano, who is the president of PICA.

"I am lucky because I have a family friend who is a very important player in the beauty industry," he said, referring to Serrano.

"Si Fanny, malaki ang papel na ginagampanan sa amin ni Sharon (Cuneta). Pag may problema kami ni Sharon, si Fanny ang nilalapitan namin. Pero pag may pagdiriwang naman, si Fanny rin ang kauna-unahan naming iniimbitahan," he added.
