Pops and Martin, reunited

A reason Martin Nievera broke free as Pops Fernandez’s husband was that he wanted to stay away from Pops’ image. When they used to do concerts together before the breakup, Martin always played second fiddle to Pops. She was the star, the Concert Queen, and although he was the Concert King, Pops sat on the throne. Martin felt tired of such an arrangement. He wanted to be his own artist and fiercely sought the distinction at some points. He perceived Pops as an enemy and sought comfort elsewhere.

They fought badly in media about the circumstances of their separation, as initiated by Pops’ tell-all interview. After more than a year, they announced that they are doing the “Missing You” reunion concert at the Araneta Coliseum on Feb. 6. The general sentiment is that they are spinning the public for their financial gain. The clincher is that Jomari Yllana, Pops’ current boyfriend, is the concert producer. Explanations are in order.

“We do business together for the sake of our children Robin and Ram,” Martin explained why they are doing the concert. “We need to work hand in hand so we could raise our boys well as they grow up.” Both boys are in college now and both parents are cooperating to give them the best education. The boys are performing with their parents in the reunion concert.

When asked during the press conference if he likes the way their story ended, Martin started to cry, which made Pops cry, too. He answered, “I have no answer to that question because there is no end. When I look at Pops, I tend to go back to when we were together, and when I see the new Pops now — her passion for her work, and she’s grown up and not my little girl anymore — I’m so proud of her. She loves her man, she defends her man and she fights for her man. She’s grown up to be a good woman.”

Kristel Moreno reunited

with father in debut

Star Magic member Kristel Moreno, who is the daughter of Alma Moreno’s brother Freddie, celebrated her 18th birthday last Jan. 14 with her father. What made it unique and special is that Freddie was in the slammer.

Freddie separated with Kristel’s mother when she was still young. He was calaboosed for a drug case. After a long time of being separated, they reunited when Alma gave Kristel a surprise debut party at the Manila Pavilion. Her niece cried tears of joy upon seeing her father and the whole family. She was greeted by her Star Circle 16 batchmates and close friends from the TV show, I Love Betty la Fea.

Kristel is managed by veteran talent manager Chit Ramos.

The other Star Magic birthday boys and girls for January are Gemma Fitzgerald (23, Jan. 1), Melissa Ricks (19, Jan. 9), Celine Lim (9, Jan. 10), Jason Abalos (23, Jan. 14), Jay-R Siaboc (22, Jan. 21), Panky Trinidad (23, Jan. 21), Kian Kazemi (22, Jan. 26) and Ronnie Liang (24, Jan. 31).

Melissa Ricks, proudly virgin

Melissa Ricks is 100 percent virgin! Yes, this Star Magic contract star turned 19 last Jan. 9, but, glory be to the highest, is still untouched. “Good for me and all gals out there who remain virgins,” chuckled Melissa. It’s not clear if she said this just to impress the boys or just to catch their attention. “Nobody’s courting me. I have not I experienced having a boyfriend since I was old enough to love,” she explained.

Asked to name her boyfriend fantasies, top of the list were Matt Evans and Jon Avila, both half-breeds and big guys. This indirectly explained why Jason Abalos was not able to make Melissa’s heart beat faster. The buzz is Jason was Melissa’s avid texter for years.

Melissa loves half-breed guys because they have big feet. She told Buzzstation, “Totoo naman yan. Cute tignan ang guys pag-malaki ang paa. Matt and Jon both wear big shoes!” Buzzstation does not know for sure if half-breeds have big shoes. What it can say with certainty is how lucky the man who will be Melissa’s first boyfriend.

Dina has not stopped looking for Mr. Right

Dina Bonnevie, the high-caliber actress of May Bukas Pa, is still praying she will find a husband or partner in life. In the series, she is the wife of a greedy and corrupt politician as played by Albert Martinez. Dina has had two broken marriages, with Vic Sotto and Dick Pengson. As she continues to seek a life partner, Dina currently works at the Philippine Stock Exchange.

The life of Dina’s character will transform through the influence of Santino, the orphaned baby abandoned in a cemetery, entrusted by the cemetery caretaker to 12 Franciscan monks. Dina says May Bukas Pa is “inspiring and moving,” which can give hope to viewers.

An out-of-the-box series without sex and violence, it stars Zijian Jaranilla as Santino. Zijian is seven years old, but small for his age. What he lacks in height he makes up with his gargantuan acting talent that has impressed even acting veterans Dina and Albert. Zijian is a pupil at the Roxas Elementary School.

May Bukas Pa is directed by Jerome Pobocan and Jojo Saguin and co-stars Jaime Fabregas, Tony Mabesa, Precious Lara Quigaman, Lito Pimentel, Dominic Ochoa, Victor Basa, David Chua, Ruben Gonzaga, Edgar Sandalo, Desiree del Valle, Arlene Muhlach, Rayver Cruz, Maja Salvador and Tonton Gutierrez.

Priest predicts Karylle to be a nun

A priest in a Subic parish has told Karylle she’ll end up a nun! That’s because despite the sexy image as an entertainer, she’s basically conservative. Karylle gave a media interview for her “Magic of Love” concert the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel Lobby Lounge at 8 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. This is the first time she’s doing a solo concert.

It’s as if she has no need for a man in her life right now. Having broken up with Dingdong Dantes, she has not fallen in love again. But there’s a reason for such attitude. She told Buzzstation, “I’m not thinking of suitors right now as there’s nobody courting her.” Christian Bautista and Jericho Rosales are not courting her, as she confirmed.

Karylle, who has a strong interest in business, is thinking of putting up a singles club for eligible out-of-love persons. She co-owns a karaoke club located at the Tomas Morato circle with ex-boyfriend Dingdong. Could the prospect of meeting bachelors be the reason she wants to put up the singles club? We don’t know what’s going on inside Karylle’s mind. The priest who said she will become a nun may end up eating his words.

Star Magic will offer public workshops in March 2009. The basic acting workshop for the camera will be handled by award-winning directors and actors  such as Bodjie Pascua, Maryo de los Reyes, Mel Chionglo, Vangie Labalan, Cirque de Soleil Acting Coach Director Phil Noble and Ricky Lee. Heading the group is director Rahyan Carlos. There will also be an acting workshop for kids, a dance workshop and film & television production workshops.

‘The Voice and the Violin’

Kuh Ledesma, the country’s original pop diva, is set to outdo herself with “The Voice and the Violin” on Feb. 13 and 14 at the Captain’s Bar at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel at 9 p.m. Kuh provides the voice with comebacking singer Ariel Rivera, while Jay Cuenca plays the violin.
