‘Porn star question’ made Cesar furious

Author: Edgar Cruz
Column: BuzzStation

“Totoo bang ikaw ang nagsabi na ‘porn star lang’ si Sunshine?” a tabloid entertainment editor asked Cesar Montano after the press conference of his new action series with Jake Cuenca, the television version of the ‘60s komiks action series Palos.

Something snapped in Cesar upon hearing the question, his kind face turning sharp. He answered back, “Hindi ko sasagutin ang tanong mo...tapos na ang interview natin.” Another tabloid reported Cesar had accused Sunshine of being a porn star, concerning their separation. Speaking in a serious voice without raising it, Cesar showed he had been insulted by the question. Although it was an innocent question, that’s not how Cesar perceived it. He implied it should not have been asked as it seriously doubts his character and his wife’s reputation. When Buzzstation tried to divert the topic to change the mood, Cesar would not budge. He insisted on giving the editor his thoughts on the issue.

Cesar successfully parried questions about his marriage during the open forum but he hesitantly accommodated questions about it after. In a huddle with entertainment journalists, he opened up having patched up his relationship with Sunshine but admitted that he is still courting her right now. He refused to accommodate some personal questions several times until the tab editor pushed her luck too far. Cesar’s reaction shows his real love for Sunshine.

Cesar plays Fabio, the original Palos. He’s the father of Giancarlo, the new Palos played by Jake Cuenca. Palos opens on Jan. 28, the same time as Piolo Pascual and Angel Locsin’s Lobo.

Angel Locsin among star witnesses

The third preliminary hearing of the joint libel case filed by Piolo Pascual and Sam Milby against Lolit Solis last Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Manila City Hall Fiscals’ Library was star-studded. Atty. Joji Alonso, Piolo and Sam’s lawyer, presented Angel Locsin, Rica Peralejo, Pokwang and Cristy Fermin as witnesses. They took their oath to show the veracity of their statements. Piolo and Sam attended as they were required by law when they presented their answers to Lolit’s counter-affidavit. Lolit was not present but was represented by Atty. Noel Malaya, her legal counsel. She missed meeting her accusers for the first time. About the out-of-court settlement asked by Atty. Noel Malaya, it broke down as Lolit is very firm not to retract her “naglalampungan” report.

Slaps and shocks

This will turn the Black Shirts on! Slapshock’s Recollection double CD, released by EMI Philippines, is loaded with adrenaline gushers enough to keep the pit humming. Slapshock marks its 10th annivesary by releasing its greatest hits. But since crew members—vocalist Jamir Garcia, guitarist Lean Ansing, guitarist Jerry Evasco, drummer Chi Evora and bassist Lee Nadela—are not type thinkers, they decided to call it the Recollection album. CD 1, the audio disc, blasts with the opener “Evil Clown,” which rambles in the beginning but proceeds with an easy-to-absorb air complete with booming guitars counterpointed with haunting notes and combined with metal rapping and guttural screaming. The false fade-out proceeds into a screamfest. Fantastic! “Madapaka” trails with its Pinoy words delivered like a twisted chant. This barrier-breaking attitude is heard in the rest of the tracks. CD 2, the video disc, features 10 Slapshock music videos. Recollection shows the incomparable first decade of Slapshock and how it will shape Pinoy—even Asian—music in the next 10 years.

Two management contracts for Maja?

“Hindi ako magsasalita,” Maja Salvador’s talent manager Chit Ramos told Buzzstation even before she is asked. Buzzstation felt terribly sorry when it learned the manager and the talent had a falling out. Chit added about Maja, “Ipe (Philip Salvador, Maja Salvador’s uncle) called me last Christmas and even before she could ask me, I told her I’m not answering her niece’s statements about me. Respeto na lang sa kanya.” Although she stated that she has still one year contract with Maja, they don’t have a written contract. They did have a contract as co-manager when Maja was still a Star Magic member. But that’s long over.

Why then is Chit claiming she is Maja’s manager. She answered, “It’s by virtue of contract of agency. If you are known as the manager of a talent, the law considers that as a contract. Ganoon ang nangyari sa amin ni Mickey Ferriols. Wala naman kaming written contract noon. Pero noong idinemanda ko siya, the court considered that we have a contract by virtue of the contract of agency. Kaya nga ako nanalo ng dalawang P5 million sa kanya na ‘di ko naman nakolekta.”

Buzzstationwonders what will happen to this contract of agency since Maja just signed a contract with Star Records’ Talent Management (STRAM) as represented by managing director Annabelle Regalado-Borja.

Jake refuses to disown Roxanne

Jake Cuenca refused to answer if he has broken off with girlfriend Roxanne Guinoo during the Palos press conference. Instead, he says they are in good terms, adding they have agreed to give priority to their respective entertainment careers. In biz talk, this means they have cooled off. Jake is paired with Bangs Garcia, the ex-Gokada girl who wore bangs covering her entire face. She is Silvia in Palos, Fabio’s co-agent and love interest.

Kuh to direct a movie this year

Initially mum about it during the post-holiday dinner she hosted at her hacienda-inspired manse in Pasay City, Kuh Ledesma revealed to Buzzstation her plan to direct a digital movie this year. Sketchy at first, she unfolded details by bits. She told invited guests about her plan to direct a movie, praising indie filmmakers in producing movies at a fraction of the cost of a standard movie. It will be about Filipino men, which will impart a lesson. It will be based on a recent experience in the US where a group of ladies talked about the men in their lives. She commented, “Ganoon lang kasimple.” But she wouldn’t budge when pressed for more details and when she is planning to do it. When most of the invited guests had left, we sat down and she admitted her time schedule. She added, “But I need an assistant director. I could not do it by myself.” She revealed that she conceptualized and directed the “Silayan (Lahat ng Araw)” music video as shot in a California beachfront, currently being edited there.

Unanswered questions

As a big corporation, the reaction of Mini-Stop on the issue of Ai Ai delas Alas’ 16-year-old son allegedly lifting two rolls of candy and eventually being abused is surprisingly unprofessional. Although the franchise store owner had issued a statement that Ai Ai will be eventually asking apology from him, it is the mother company that seems unbothered to do damage control that a responsible corporation would do. It has allowed the news item to spill without trying to give its own side. Could they be holding information like video footage from a hidden camera or cash register audit tape showing the boy did not pay for the candies while he had paid for the other merchandise? But whether the boy did filch or not is not the main issue here. The way the store clerk handled him after the alleged incident is the big issue. Nobody has the right to harm him even if he had done the worst of things. The store clerk and the companies he represent will have to be responsible for this. Buzzstation seriously doubt if the boy did commit the act as he knows too well it will damage his mother’s name. Buzzstation has met him several times and been impressed by his close relationship to and respect for his mother.

Selda raved

Co-directors Paolo Villaluna and Ellen Ramos are the raves of critics and other filmmakers with their second full-length feature Selda, the story of a young man Rommel, played by 2007 Cinema One Originals Film Festival Best Actor Sid Lucero. He accidentally kills a boy, putting him in the slammer. There, he meets characters who will change him, including inmate Esteban (Emilio Garcia) who becomes his rock and protector. Ara Mina plays Rommel’s love interest. Seldareturns to classicist forms and delivers a stylish, deliberately paced treatise on love. During strange moments, a sublime and disquieting portrait of a young man whose search for happiness, innocence and true love is laden with guilt and doubt. Selda screens on Feb. 13 to 19 at the Robinsons Galeria Indiesine and Robinson’s Ermita Manila.
