| Ricky Reyes plays the Parlor GameAuthor: Isah V. Red After successfully turning his small beauty parlor in San Juan into a multi-million enterprise with more than a dozen salons across the archipelago. Ricky Reyes has shifted his energy (although just a wee bit of it) to television. Not that he is new in the medium. He is in fact become one of the most durable TV hosts (longer than Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda combined) and just a few steps away from German Kuya Germs Moreno from becoming virtual wallpaper on your TV screens. After hosting (and producing) a beauty show on RPN-9 every Sunday for nearly a decade, he moved to GMA Network when the latter inked a deal with Eddie Villanueva to provide secular programming for his fledgling Channel 11 (then operated as Zoe Broadcasting by the born-again-Christian group Jesus Is Lord of Villanueva) with an Oprah-inspired show called Gandang Ricky Reyes. Ricky, a typical Aries (he is celebrating his birthday on April 12), wants to get into new and unexplored areas, discover how far can his mind go. And so Gandang Ricky Reyes has evolved into something else, and not quite like Oprah, the show. Ricky has asked his TV team to retool the show and make it more exciting. I get a certain kind of excitement when I think of something new, either for the salon or the TV show, he said during an early teatime at Dulcinea last midweek. I realized that I was talking to the person referred to by the local lifestyle media as the beauty guru and endearingly called mother by his battalion of hair stylists and makeup artists that make Gandang Ricky Reyes salons the most profitable chain of beauty parlors in the Philippines (and probably in the Asian region, if not the whole world). Isnt he the one who introduced the word rebonding into the beauty lexicon? After nights of brainstorming, the team came up with a game show cum reality TV, and as usual Ricky provided a very apt title Parlor Game. The game consists of several roundselimination, semi-finals, and finals. In the elimination round, 15 hairdressers will have to answer multiple choice questions in three categories: Ganda, Super Ganda and Mega Ganda. The host will ask questions until only four players are left. These four will advance to the semi-finals round in which they will be put in the Gandang Arena for a Ganda Challenge that they must accomplish within a given period of time. They will be judged based on the following: skills35 percent; over-all look35 percent; audience impact30 percent. The player who receives the most number of lucky cards from the judges (Ricky Reyes, Joanne Quintas, Renee Salud and Hair Diva Champion Rommel Dobluis) will advance to the final round. The final round or Master One-On-One is the showdown between the semi-finalist and the defending champion. Ricky will give the two contestants another Ganda Challenge. The same criteria for judging used in the semi-finals round will be used to determine the winner. Again, the player with the most number of lucky cards from the judges will be proclaimed Salon Master of the Week. Parlor Game of Gandang Ricky Reyes airs every Sunday, 10:30 a.m., on QTV-11. Papaya in Good Morning, America Edu Manzanos Papaya dance, also a track in a compilation CD that bears his name, has reached a new audience in the US of A. A recent edition of the popular Good Morning America on ABC News showed its hosts, led by Diane Sawyer discussing the dance craze that swept the country last year and continues to hold sway among young and old. Forget the Chicken Dance. Forget the Macarena. Everybodys taking a shot at it (the Papaya dance), the popular hosts declared over US TV. To prove their point, the show flashed footage of children dancing the Papaya, and even Army soldiers dancing to its catchy beat. The heretofore staid and serious soldiers actually broke their characteristic formally to unabashedly dance to the Papaya beat! And no one thought less of them at all. How can one think less of them, and others who have taken the Papaya bandwagon when, as the Good Morning America hosts said, its all over, even on YouTube? And just to show how widely followed it is, the four American hosts danced the Papaya, with a hesitant Sawyer chiding her co-hosts, You practiced [the steps!] You practiced! The best part of all is that Sawyer and company recognize it came all the way from the Philippines, and its another source of national pride all over again. Take a bow, Edu! Rewind to the good times If you were already around in the 60s and the 70s, you must be consumed by a wistful desire to revisit the era. A tankful of gas at P20. No traffic jams. Lunch for P3.
