Roxanne: I’m not a boyfriend snatcher

Roxanne: I’m not a boyfriend snatcher

Author: Mario E. Bautista
Column: Dream Factory

AT THE presscon of "Banana Split," Roxanne Guinoo clarified the issue that she’s a boyfriend snatcher and is the reason why her leading man, Sid Lucero, broke up with his non-showbiz girlfriend.

"Nabasa ko ngang ako ang dahilan but my conscience is clean about that issue," she says. "Although Sid and I really got along fine sa ‘Ligaw na Bulaklak,’ hindi naman kami on. Kailangan lang talagang maging okay ang bonding namin para maging mas credible ang trabaho namin sa show. But I guess hindi yun na-understandng girlfriend ni Sid kasi nga non-showbiz siya.

"Pero wala akong intention na mang-agaw ng boyfriend ng may boyfriend. Sid naman never told me na nagkaroon sila ng ganoong issue ng girlfriend niya and it’s only when I read about it na tinanong ko siya. I can feel that whatever issue they had, na-settle na rin naman nila. But I understand his girlfriend’s situation completely. Mahirap talaga mag-adjust kapag ang boyfriend mo, close sa mga kapwa niya artista. I’m hoping sana nga clear na, kasi I don’t want our friendship ni Sid to be affected at ayoko ring masira ang relationship nila. Nakilala ko na rin naman ang girlfriend niya dahil dumalaw na ito sa tapingnamin."

What if Sid would really court her? "Okay lang, pero make sure na walang sabit. But right now, ayoko munang mag-boyfriend.Halos araw-araw ang taping ko sa ‘Ligaw’ at meron pa kong ‘Banana Split,’ so work na lang muna ko."

Her friends say that after she got heart broken with Joross Gamboa and Jake Cuenca, Roxanne really wants to enjoy her single blessedness for a long time. What can she say now that it’s Bea Alonzo who’s Jake’s inamorata? "Wala. When I first saw them together, I told myself ‘Ay, totoo pala ang tsismis.’ But now, I’m used to seeing them kasi lagi naman silang magkasama sa ‘ASAP’ every Sunday."

Vhong Navarro and Toni Gonzaga’s first team-up, "D’Anothers," was a big hit. How come it took three years before they’re paired again in "My Only U?" "Una, nalinya kasi si Toni kay Sam Milby," says Vhong. "Tapos, hindi rin magtugma ang schedules namin kasi lagi siyang nagho-host ng PBB. Now, bumalik din siya sa akin."

"Si Vhong talaga ang first guy na naka-closeko sa showbiz," says Toni. "Nang magkasama kami sa ‘Wazzup Wazzup.’"

How come they never became on? "Si Vhong kasi, hindi marunong manligaw."

"Masyado pa kasing bagets si Toni ng una kaming magkasama at lagi niyang katabi ang parents niya, left and right. Crush ko talaga siya pero mahirap din yung katrabaho mo, tapos on kayo, nagkakaproblema lang sa set."

If she’s not committed to director Paul Soriano, would Toni fall for Vhong? "Oo. Vhong is lovable at kahit sinong babae mai-in love sa kanya. Iba kasi ang sense of humor niya. Alam niya kilittin ang puso mo. Sweet din siya. Sa set, he gave me a big bed I can usesa tapings at nagpapabili siya lagi ng food."

Is there pressure on their part since their film is Star Cinema’s next release after the John Lloyd-Sara monster hit, "A Very Special Love," also directed by Cathy Molina? "May pressure talaga kasi sobrang blockbuster ang susundan namin," says Vhong. "We can’t promise na lalampasan namin yun. Basta we just gave our best and we hope to entertain the audience."

What makes their tandem click? "May built in rapport kasi sila," says Direk Cathy. "Pareho silang makulit in real life, nakakaaliw, may konting kilig na e-enhance na lang sa screen. That’s what I intend to capture on film in ‘My Only U’ where Vhong plays Toni’s landlord na na-in love sa kanya kahit may curse ang buhay ni Toni na mamamatay siya when she’s 25 years old."

What’s the difference between Richard Gutierrez’ trip with KC Concepcion to Greece and the more recent one they had in Vienna? "Sa Greece, trabaho talaga kami to shoot our movie," he says. "In Vienna, we just attended the premiere night tapos bakasyon na kami at puro pasyal doon then in Paris and Budapest. We had a lot of good time together, talagang quality time. We really enjoyed our bonding moments kasama na ang brotherko, si Raymond."

They enjoyed their stay in Paris so much. "KC has a lot of friends there dahil dun siya nag-college and she introduced me to them. It so happened na fashion week there at that time and there were Filipino designers around kaya may nakita mga kabababayan. It’s an unforgettable time for us."

Did he fall in love with KC all the more? "Paris is so beautiful. It’s the city of lights, of love and romance. So yun na lang yun. Let’s just leave it at that na lang for now."

In Greece, they bought souvenir necklaces for each other. So what did they buy in Paris this time? "Sorry, guys, but I won’t tell you. Iwan nyo na lang sa amin yun. Pero kapag nakita nyong magkasama at suot namin yun, yun na yon. Abangan nyo na lang."

Some people don’t believe that they’re still just on the friendship stage but are now really going steady. "Well, as of now, what you see is what you get. Basta kung anong nakikita nyo sa’min, you guys can judgena lang. Para may mystery pa rin."

But would he say that whatever feelings he and KC have for each other got to a more intense level after their European trip? "Of course. There’s really nothing like traveling together for you to get to know a person better. Talagang nakapag-bonding kami nang husto roon. We had a lot of fun. It’s a great adventure and we enjoyed it so much. We visited a lot of places na talagang very memorable. In one week, we got to three different countries so marami talagang masayang adventures that are all spontaneous and not planned. Pero siempre, Paris is the most special. If you saw the movie ‘Casablanca,’ there’s an unforgettable line there saying ‘We’ll always have Paris’. So yun na yon."

At the launching of Richard Gutierrez as Unique Toothpaste model, we asked The Company’s owner Mr. Alfonso Supetran if Richard was their first celebrity endorser. He replied no, as their first one was Christine Bersola. So why did it take so long to get another one? He was candid enough to say that his company, ACS Manufacturing, lost money after Christine and they did not have any budget anymore for a new celebrity endorser, until now. "Nalugi kami noon, e," he added.

Being a neophyte in the ways of showbiz, little did he know that some writers will capitalize on that and wrote that Christine was the reason why The Company lost money and nearly went bankrupt. But naturally, all the negative write ups hurt Christine. "Kasi, lumalabas na siya ang sinisi na nalugi ang kumpanya," says one writer.

So Mr. Supetran personally called her to explain that he didn’t mean it to be that way and that what he said in the presscon was just blown out of proportion. Christine accepted his apology. But this should be a lesson for businessmen who join showbiz presscons. Next time, they should be more careful as, generally, the showbiz press capitalizes on the negative rather than the positive to capture the general reader’s attention.

Some folks are accusing director Joel Lamangan for joining the bandwagon in making cheap gay flicks with his first indie flick, "Walang Kawala," which opens in Manila, Cebu and Bacolod on November 12. His manager, Manny Valera, defends him.

"This is not like other gay themed films na tipid sa budget, iisa lang ang location at usually sa loob lang ng isang bahay." says Manny. "For this, we shot on location in Morong, Bataan, and in various places in Manila, including a gay bar. At hindi rin ito basta cheap na kabaklaang puro sex scenes na lalaki sa lalaki dahil it tackles a very relevant theme, the sex trafficking of children for prostitution done with the help of cops and some corrupt officials. Also, the stars at not unknown newcomers kundi parehong nakapagbida na, sina Polo Ravales and Joseph Bitangcol, who give their best performances to date in this film. It’s a disturbing masterpiece from Direk Joel that aims to prick the conscience of viewers and we aim to show it in film festivals abroad. It just so happened that the two main characters are gay."

"I’m proud of ‘Walang Kawala,’" says Direk Joel. "The powerful script was written by Palanca Award winner Eric Ramos and the acting of Polo and Joseph is quite electrifying. They play childhood friends who both love basketball, and each other. But of course, they cannot come out with their passionate relationship in the conservative fishing village where they live, so Polo gets married to Althea Vega. Joseph gets terribly jealous and runs away to Manila. Althea eventually discovers the truth and Polo follows Joseph to Manila, where they both become victims of a perverted cop, si Emilio Garcia, who’s married to Jean Garcia and is into human sex trafficking. Lahat ng nagsasabing ka-cheapang movie ang ‘Walang Kawala,’ panoorin muna nila bago nila husgahan. You can now watch the uncut version of its trailer sa youtube."

Direk Joel also announces that he has started shooting his filmfest entry, "Desperadas 2," starring Ruffa Gutierrez, Rufa Mae Quinto, Iza Calzado, Marian Rivera, plus Eugene Domingo and Nina Jose. "Last year, I started the first ‘Desperadas’ in July pa. This time, October na, so I hope magtuloy-tuloy ang shooting para matapos kami ng November 27."

Pops Fernandez admits now that she and Jomari Yllana had a misunderstanding. "I think that’s how the rumor that we broke up started," she says at the "Divas 4 Divas" presscon. "It’s the first time such thing happened since we became on kasi hindi kami talaga nagkakaroon ng away. But don’t ask me na lang what started it. Secret na lang namin yun, puede? It wasn’t really that big naman, kaya lang very first ngang nagkaroon ng ‘di pagkakaintindihan kaya siguro some people thought it’s that serious. That happened on Septemper 15, o see, tandang-tanda ko pa ang date, and after a few days, we communicated and nagkaayos din kami agad. But when we kissed and made up, I realized, exciting pala. So ngayong alam ko na, I’ll just keep doing making tampo all the time," she laughs.

Were they really on the verge of calling it quits for good? Who gave in first? "Let’s just say that I realized I didn’t give him the chance to explain himself well. Noong mag-usap naman kami, we were both calm. No one raised his or her voice. Malumanay lang kasi we have cooled off at hindi na kasing affected like before. We just became more honest with each other at naayos naman ang problema and we started dating again after that."

Is it true Gabby Concepcion is the cause of their fight? "Naku, hindi. Huwag na isali si Gabby rito, please. Kawawa naman yung tao. Actually, akong unang nang-away at hindi si Jom. Kaya wala talagang kinalaman si Gabby rito."

She admits Jom is easy to get along with. "Generally, masaya naman kami at magaan ang samahan namin. But that’s not enough reasonpara pakasal na kami, no? We’re just enjoying each other’s company right now and we know how to give and take. Bigayan lang. Kung saan ito hahantong later, only time will tell."
