Ruffa refuses to do kissing scene with JayR

Ruffa Gutierrez says their entire family felt relief after her mom Annabelle Rama’s doctor told them that the biopsy on the growth taken from her mom’s uterus is clear of cancer cells. "We’re so happy that wala naman pala dapat ikabahala tungkol sa kanya," she says. "Naiyak nga ako sa tuwa. Finally, nakalabas na siya ng hospital on Saturday and is back home now. Naglalakad na nga. Gusto ng manood ng fight ni Manny Pacquiao sa Las Vegas. I’m just thankful na si Daddy rin, naagapan sa angioplasty and is back to playing golf."

Her role as Daniella in "Betty La Fea" got her positive reviews. "I’m really thankful for that. From the start excited na talaga kowith it as I knew I could give it justice. But some friends said I might lose endorsements in playing the role of a contravida. Luckily, people love the character. Even kids approach me and say ‘Are you Daniella?’ I really enjoy doing it so sana tumagal pa siya at ma-extend. I love working with the staff and the entire cast, lalo na sina Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz who have no superstar complex at all. I’m also proud of Megan Young, who plays my sister. Kasi she’s much younger than the age of her character, Marcella, but she’s good in it."

Even her performance in "Desperadas 1" and "Monster Mom" got good reviews. "I can feel I’ve matured na rin as an actress, especially in ‘Desperadas 2’ now na mas lovable na ang role ko as Isabelle at hindi na basta spoiled brat. But I wish I’d someday get a real meaty and challenging part na hindi glamorous ang role ko. ‘Yung wala akong make-up at mukhang probinsiyana. I’m just thankful I got the chance to work with the great Lino Brocka. At 14, I was nominated as best actress for his movie, ‘Makiusap Ka sa Diyos.’"

But most challenging roles are now done in indie movies. Would she be open to do one?

"Yes, why not? As long as it’ll showcase a different Ruffa at magiging panlaban sa iba’t ibang international film festivals."

How come she rejected having a kissing scene with Jay-R in "Desperadas 2"?

"Kasi I believe I can show that I love him and grateful to him in the film by just giving him a tight hug. Also, nag-iingat na rin ako. My daughters are growing up and I don’t want them asking me why I’m kissing another man. Isa pa, baka mapanood ni Yilmaz at magkaroon na naman ng gulo. E, he’s a sleeping giant now, ‘no?"

Won’t that limit her as an actress?

"I’m willing naman to do a love scene in a serious drama, but it has to be worth it and it’d give me the chance to win an award. E, alam ko namang my role in ‘Desperadas 2’ is not pang-award."

While Ruffa was being interviewed, her daughter Lorin called her up on her cellphone asking her what time she’s coming home, where is she and who is she with.

"Mahigpit pa ‘yan sa mommy ko at kay Yilmaz combined," she laughs.

Viewers of "The Buzz" are always eager to know what she and Kris Aquino will wear in the show. Isn’t there any rivalry between them?

"I really love having Kris with us now kasi I’m more challenged to do my best as it’s undeniable that she’s the ‘Queen of Talk.’ I love our team work and also with Boy Abunda. Wala kaming patalbugan as we give way to each other. Kris would even text me before each show to find out what I’m wearing para well coordinated kami. She’s really considerate, intelligent and I like her as a person. I think she also likes mekasi she has included me in her devotional prayers. Madasalin kasi siya, e."

Ruffa says 2008 has been very good her. "‘Desperadas 1" was shown starting January 1st this year and it’s a hit kaya, heto, maysequel ngayon that opens naman on Christmas Day. I also did ‘Monster Mom’ so naka-three movies ako this year. I also did ‘Kokey’ and now, ‘Betty La Fea,’ at may ‘The Buzz’ pa ako. I have so many endorsements kaya I’m in list of top 20 endorsers at marami, nag-renew na. I really thank the Lord and I hope 2009 will be just as fruitful as 2008."

The presscon of Viva Concerts’ "Legends of OPM" turned out to be a hilarious affair with the legends involved (except for Nonoy Zuniga) trying to outdo in each other in making wisecracks. Of course, no one can top Rico Puno in this department as he has no qualms in delivering the raunchiest of jokes. Are they really legends? Rey Valera says, "Yes, kasi may lumot na kami." Eva Eugenio then quips: "Hoy, hindi tayo lumot, tayo’y alamat, kaya nga legends."

Asked the two women if they’re married. "Ako biyuda na," says Claire de la Fuente. "Ang mister, sumakabilang buhay na two years ago." "’Yung sa’kin, sumakabilang bahay naman," says Eva, meaning her husband left her and her daughter for another household.

Eva says her daughter, Evangeline Nora Mae, now 18, will be in the concert. "Very short participation lang. Ayaw niya but she also sings well so gusto ko, masanay siya sa tao. She’s now taking up mass media in La Salle."

Is it true her kumare and former rival Imelda Papin married a rich man in the States?

"Yes. His name is Oscar Parel and he lives in a house formerly owned by Hollywood star Clark Gable, may sariling elevator, pool and tennis court. I’m so happy for her that she found ‘yung hinahanap niya. Sana nga, ihanap niya rin ako ng mayaman doon."

Doing "Legends of OPM" is both happy and nostalgic for Eva. "Ngayon lang kami magkakasamang anim dito, along with Joey Albert. All of us, may kanya-kanyang hits so this is going to be a night of really great music."

Eva is known for "Tukso," "Pag-ibig Na Walang Dangal," and "Ano ang Gagawin Kapag Wala Ka Na." Claire for "Sayang," "Nakaw na Pag-ibig" and "Something in Your Eyes." Joey for "Ikaw Lang ang Mamahalin," "Tell Me," "Iisa Pa Lamang." Rico for "Kapalaran," "Damdamin," "May Bukas Pa." Nooy for "Kumusta Ka," "Doon Lang," "Never Ever Say Goodbye." Rey for "Maging Sino Ka Man," "Pangako Sa’Yo," "Kung Kailangan Mo Ako."

New actor-singer Orlando Sol was with the group of director Maryo de los Reyes that went to the recent Brussels International Filmfest. "I sang the theme song of Direk Maryo’s ‘Torotot,’ ‘Dahil Ikaw Lamang sa Akin,’ and I was requested to sing it live at the awards night," he says. "But even before we left Manila, they also requested that I sing a French song for the closing. We did some research and found out that their greatest balladeer is Jacques Brell, parang Jed Madela nila roon. I chose one of his songs, ‘Impossible Dream’ in French then inaral ko with the help of a French teacher so I can get the diction right. One week ‘yun, wala akong ginawa kundi pakinggan sa Ipod ang song niya araw-gabi."

"When they heard him, na-shock sila," says Direk Maryo, who’s managing Orlando. "Sino itong Filipinong kumakanta ngFrench? They were so impressed that they’re now asking him to do an album of French songs there, with Tagalog versions.:

Emmanuel Canales in real life, Orlando was performing in a Holy Week play at the St. Paul Church in Timog Avenue when Direk Maryo saw him. "His assistant asked for my number then he called me up later kunginterested ako mag-showbiz," said Orlando. "I said yes at pinakuha niya agad ako ng acting workshops. Minsan, in a karaoke bar, kumanta ako and when he heard, he said, may boses ka pala, so he made me the lead vocalist of the all-male group he put up, M-Gage. We’re now preparing our album."

Born on December 10, 1985 in Manila, his family moved to Butuan, Agusan del Norte when he was in grade school. "My father inherited some land there so lumipat kami roon. That’s where I finished high school. I came to Manila for college to take up marine transportation and be a seaman. E, napunta na nga ako sa showbiz so I didn’t get to finish it. One sem na lang, tapos na."

He has played bit roles in some movies of Direk Maryo but he’s now a mainstay as the leader of the band of Dion Ignacio in GMA-7’s afternoon soap, "Saan Darating ang Umaga."

Dingdong Dantes gave the first Christmas party we attended this season and he raffled off so many TV sets, washing machines, refs, DVD players, watches, cellphones and other appliances to the invited writers. "This is my way of saying thank-you to the press for supporting me," he says. "Year 2008 has been a very good for me. There have been low points but there are definitely more high points.

The high points are surely his hit shows "Marimar" and "Dyesebel," his movie "One True Love" and the so many endorsements he did, as well as being chosen as one the Sexiest Men in the World by Hollywood’s E Channel. He’s leaving for L.A. early December to do a show with Marian Rivera at Shrine Auditorium and he wants to watch the latest Pacquiao fight in Las Vegas. Upon his return, he’d shoot his new TV series with Marian, "Babaeng Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang" by Carlo J. Caparas.
