Author: Edgar Cruz
Column: BuzzStation

Shaina Magdayao has always idolized her elder sister Vina Morales, but during the media launch of Komiks Presents Mars Ravelo’s Dragonna, which will open today, Dec. 13, she said she will not get pregnant out of wedlock like her ate. Dragonna is the exciting story of Olive (Shaina), a young lady who discovers she has dragon-like powers. Having the ability to create fire every time she loses her temper, Olive will use her strength to fight crime and protect the powerless and unaided. Amid her heroic tasks and responsibilities, she will find herself involved with a guy, Edgar (Jake Cuenca). She’ll learn later she’s bound to lose her special gift once she falls in love. This is Shaina and Jake’s reunion after their well-loved Your Song Presents A Million Miles Away starrer. “The chemistry of the two on cam is very much felt and is very effective,” said director Dondon Santos. Allesandra de Rossi plays the antagonist in Dragonna’s life. The powerhouse cast also includes Bayani Agbayani, Brod Pete, Jeffry Tam, Sophia Baar, Mike de la Cruz, Eda Nolan and Carlos Agassi.

Breaking buzz: Shaina denied she had a boob job. She said that they appear bigger because of the bra she is using and her Dragonna costume has a plunging neckline.

A tragic end for Didith Reyes

Eva Fonda, the hit ABS-CBN teleserye starring Christine Reyes, starts off with a version of Didith Reyes’s hit song “Bakit Ako Mahihiya?” With this song, one of Didith’s signature songs is presently enjoying a measure of popularity, but it proved too short for her. She was found dead last Wednesday at 8 a.m. in home of a friend in Laguna. She was 60. The cause of her death was not immediately known. Didith, at one time known as the “Jukebox Queen,” enjoyed a short lease of fame as a sexy singer of melodramatic songs from 1975 to 1977 with such songs as “Araw-Araw, Gabi-Gabi,” “Hindi Kami Damong Ligaw,” “Bakit Ako Mahihiya?” and “Nananabik.” Out of the limelight due to unprofesionalism, she had a long bout with alcoholism and drug use. She also became the victim of domestic abuse from her live-in partner. Some people in the entertainment industry and a nuns’ organization helped her out to seek justice and to be rehabilitated. She was given the opportunity to work as a receptionist at the Reyes Haircutters, but she failed to live up to the discipline needed for the work so she was eventually removed. She got depressed and returned to the bottle. Middle of this year, she was attempting a comeback as a jazz singer, which never took off. Her remains will be on view at the Holy Family Chapel of the Mount Carmel Church in Quezon City.

Kamikazee guitarist detained in Dubai

Kamikazee, composed of lead vocalist Jay Contreras, guitarist/back-up vocalist Jomal Linao, guitarist Led Zeppelin Tuyay, bassist Jason “Puto” Astete and drummer Allan “Bords” Burdeos, had a successful concert in Dubai last Dec. 5 with Pupil as organized by The Filipino Channel (TFC). On their out of the country, the pocket of Led Zeppelin’s bag was detected to contain traces of marijuana granules, which luminated when they passed the airport’s x-ray machine. For this reason, he was detained at the Dubai International Airport. The rest of the band members were able to return to the country. According to information, Led Zeppelin was not carrying marijuana and if there’s a trace in his bag, it’s probably an old residue in clothes that were improperly cleaned. Kamikazee is the same band whose lead singer Jay was almost detained in Doha, Qatar, for removing his shirt in public. Such a thing is strictly prohibited in a Muslim country like Qatar and Dubai. Promoter TFC is fixing the problem to be able to take Led Zeppelin out of detention. His family got word from TFC that he will be home before Christmas.

Christine got all the new shows at ABS-CBN

A new publicity photo of Maja Salvador shows her wearing a bikini, amply revealing her body, which she has kept covered from the public for the longest time. Is this a tell-tale sign she’s ready to join Christine Reyes as “pantasya ng bayan,” but is she willing to be a men’s magazine’s cover girl soon? For eight months now, Maja has not had a major television project. Planned launching projects such as Anna Liza and Moonriver never took off. Even the number of her television endorsements except Sun Cellular has nosedived. Then again, even KC Concepcion has gone down the star meter. She does not have a television project now and her television endorsements are visibly less. Now managed by Veronique del Rosario’s Viva Artist Agency, Christine is getting all the new shows at ABS-CBN. She has three shows now: Kahit Isang Saglit (which wraps up soon), Banana Split and Eva Fonda. She’s also on the cover of Maxim’s December issue and the December Girl of Maxim’s calendar. She starts shooting her new teleserye with ABS-CBN in January and her full-length feature with Viva Films.

Will Dayo be among MMFF’s top three grossers?

Of the eight official entries to the 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival, the only movie for children is Dayo. The rest are family-oriented movies such as Tanging Ina Ninyong Lahat and Iskul Bukol...20 Years After and general interest flicks such as One Night Only. That is why there’s a strong possibility that children will want to see Dayo on the festival’s first two days. Dayo is a well-made Filipino animation movie, the best we have come up so far, with a thrilling narrative. But this will be dependent if the movie will catch children’s top-of-mind awareness before the festival rolls, through advertising, promotion and word-of-mouth. Tough agenda, but it’s a very good animation movie, which can make it as one of the top three grossers if the producers put their mind into it and they have the logistics to put the strategy into action. Tanging Ina Ninyong Lahat and Iskul Bukol have this built-in demand so they are strong contenders to the top three.

Diana not affected by actresses who begged off from One Night Only

Diana Zubiri graduates fully from bold roles, but she’s not about to leave the sexy genre altogether in the romantic-comedy flick One Night Only, Octo Arts Films’ official entry to the 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival. Diana stars in this full-length feature directed by Jose Javier Reyes with today’s sizzling female stars Katrina Halili, Valerie Concepcion, Alessandra de Rossi and Jennylyn Mercado. Since she is starring with an all-girl main cast, Diana admitted to certain levels of competition among them. She said, “It’s something na hindi mo naman maiiwasan especially kasi mga babae kami.” Billing is not an issue to Diana. She is one of the original picks for this movie that had a controversial casting issue when some of its supposed stars begged off from the roles. Diana explained, “Hindi naman ako naapektuhan nung intriga before kasi wala namang nabago sa role ko and may faith naman ako sa project na ito kaya walang problema sa ’kin.” One Night Only is directed by Jose Javier Reyes. This five-in-one romantic comedy also stars Ricky Davao, Paolo Contis, Jon Avila, Joross Gamboa, Ogie Diaz, Chokoleit and Manilyn Reynes.
