Sheryl & other bad girls - oncam that is

SHERYL & CO. - Contravida roles, if well written and acted, can eclipse that of the vida.

Cherie Gil comes to mind, memorable in those anti-heroine parts in Sharon Cuneta starrers. An intelligent actress should have no qualms about being bad, even very bad, onscreen.

Look at Sheryl Cruz who shines in contravida roles in soaps, the latest being as the cruel and aristocratic mother of Geoff Eigenmann in the GMA telenovela 'Rosalinda.'

To think that during her teenage years in the '80s, Sheryl was such a sweet girl. When she staged a comeback a few years back after staying in the US, Sheryl decided to accept anti-heroine offers. After all, she's now a mature woman, already a mother and wife (actually separated - divorced? - from Fil-American husband John Norman Bustos).

Following in Sheryl's footsteps are Angelu de Leon and Angelika de la Cruz, who used to play lead roles. They're good when they're bad.

OTHER BAD GIRLS - Oncam that is, starting with Francine Prieto and Iwa Moto. Their build and height make them effective adversaries of the latest Darna, Marian Rivera. Heard that Iwa's Valentina the snakewoman and Francine's Armida the hawkwoman (babaeng lawin).

Typecast in contravida parts is Bianca King. She's got tough mestiza features reminiscent of Etang Discher, Carol Varga, Rosa Rosal, anti-heroines of yore.

Also potential other women are such actresses as Carlene Aguilar, Jackie Rice, and Valeen Montenegro.

Carlene is in the mold of such iconic villainesses as Bella Flores (now retired, residing in the US) and Zeny Zabala (still around).

Jackie and Valeen have yet to play out-and-out contravida, but they seem to have the fire of, say, young other women.

Valeen is the granddaughter of the Brown Adonis of the '50s, Mario Montenegro, and LVN actress Letty Alonzo (Arrastia offcam, related to the mother of Isabel Preysler, the first wife of Julio Iglesias). She's cast in the Aljur Abrenica-Kris Bernal starrer, 'I'll Be Waiting for You,' playing a wedding planner secretly in love with Aljur.
