Sunshine reacts to rumors

Author: Mario E. Bautista
Column: Freehand

AFTER she was replaced by Camille Prats in “Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan,” Sunshine Dizon is back working full blast in the movie “Sundo” and on TV in “Obra. ” Is it true she resented it when Camille replaced her? “No, ewan ko nga kung bakit may ganyang balita, hindi naman totoo,” she says. “I was happy for Camille kasi hindi ko naman talaga magagawa ang ‘Gaano’ that time as I got sick. About Katrina, the truth is we enjoyed working with each other in the movie. Kalog nga siya at masarap kasama, along with Mark Bautista. ”

Is it true she was depressed because of her breakup with Jojo Manlongat? “No. Hindi ako made-depress ng dahil lang sa kanya. Why should I get depressed because of a man? At bakit ako made-depress, eh ang dami kong projects? May movie ako, may ‘Obra’, then in November, I’ll start ‘All About Eve’ on primetime. Guest din ako sa ‘Dear Friend’ with Antoinette Taus, reunion namin after ‘Anna Karenina’ days. The real reason I was hospitalized was my recurrent migraines. They had to wean me from the injectable medication being given to me and it took more than a month before it got out of my system. Ngayon, pag may migraine ako, nilalagyan na lang ng oil or through acupuncture. At ayoko munang mag-boyfriend. My dad called from the U. S. at sabi nga, tigilan ko na raw muna dahil mukhang malas ako sa lalaki. Before I started taping for ‘Obra’, nagpa-liposuction muna ako ng arms at back ko. Kasi I workout in the gym, pero lalong lumaki ang arms ko at lumapad ang likod ko, kaya pina-lipo ko na kay Dr. Manny Calayan. ”

At the presscon of “Obra,” GMA made a special audio-visual presentation for her tracing her career from being a child star, her teen years and showing highlights from soaps she did like “Ikaw Lang ang Mamahalin,” “Kung Mawawala Ka,” “Impostora,” “La Vendetta” and “Bakekang. ” No doubt Sunshine is really one of our most intense young actresses today and her talent will be put to good use in four episodes of “Obra,” starting this Thursday, October 9. In “Drama Queen, Alamat ni Mira Bella”, she plays a movie star who’ll be shown aging from her 20s up to the time she’s 70, directed by Maryo de los Reyes. In “Rosa Negra,” she plays a black girl ridiculed by society, directed by Jun Lana. In “Sapi,” she plays the wife of Mark Anthony Fernandez who gets possessed by an evil spirit, directed by Topel Lee. In “Butch,” she plays a lesbian who takes care of a child who is later claimed by its real mother, directed by Joel Lamangan. So which role is her favorite?

“They’re all very challenging roles, naiiba, kaya lahat sila, favorite ko. ”

JOHN MORE LOYAL TO ABS
REPLACING ‘Varga’ in ABS-CBN’s “Komiks Presents” on Saturdays starting October 11 at 6 p. m. is “Tiny Tony,“ another Mars Ravelo opus. The first episode was shown to the press and it stars John Prats in the title role. His parents are Richard Quan and Susan Africa. His dad died of a heart attack on the day Tony was born, overjoyed upon seeing his son. His mom then rears him by herself. He turns out to be a genius who can solve difficult mathematical problems in a jiffy, so he is made a scholar by the owner of a school, Dr. Morgan (Pen Medina).

He got his doctorate degree at the age of 22 and Dr. Morgan got him as his research assistant, making Dr. Morgan’s son (Coco Martin) very jealous. While researching on a cure to make cancerous tumors shrink, Dr. Morgan splashed some of the solution on Tony and there’s an explosion. When Tony regains consciousness, he has shrunk to only six inches and this becomes the start of his adventures as a diminutive superhero.

“It’s the hardest part I’ve played so far as, in 90 percent of the series, maliit ako and I usually tape by myself on a green screen through chroma special effects,” says John. “I just watch on the TV monitor what my co-actors are doing in a scene at dapat, synchronized talaga ang lahat ng movements namin para maging credible ang dating on screen. Halimbawa, I’m kissing my leading lady, Alex Gonzaga who’s of normal size, I tape by myself at kailangan, tumapat talaga ‘yung lips ko sa mukha niya kundi ire-retake ang buong eksena. Lalong mahirap sa action scenes. Para maabot ko ‘yung mga kalaban who are much bigger than me, I use a jetpack that enables me to fly so I can reach them. Kinukunan ito nang naka-harness ako sa green screen then isinasama through special effects doon sa action scenes, so kailangan, bawat suntok ko, mag-swak na tatama sa kalaban ko. ”

John admits he earlier planned to move to GMA-7. “But then, ABS is really my home kasi 17 years na ako rito. So when they showed me their plans for me, nauna na ‘yung ‘Your Song’ and now, ‘Tiny Tony’, I decided to stay. Excited talaga ako with ‘Tiny Tony’ as this is my first title role project. ”

JASON ON PINKY-EDU AFFAIR
JASON Webb was an active player in the PBA for seven years. He’s now still seen on TV as a PBA commentator and he’s also hosting “My MVP (Most Valuable Pilipino)” on TV-5, seen tonight and every Sunday at 6 p. m.

“It’s my first hosting job for a regular show and it’s a learning experience,” he says. “It’s good the show is about something I’m very comfortable with, basketball, so it’s also very rewarding for me. We are helping prospective players who want to be given a second chance to play professionally. They have different stories, mostly sad, and viewers can relate with their struggles in life. One contestant stopped playing basketball after his dad died as he has to work as his family’s breadwinner. Another one got married early and his own family became his priority. A touching story is about a black guy who’s always being teased as ‘Negro! Negro!’. He now wants to excel in basketball as a way of improving his life. It’s really about people aiming to make their dreams come true. ”

Jason is married and has two daughters: Gabrielle, 4, and Tatiana, 2. How is his brother Hubert of the Vizconde Massacre case? “He’s been in prison for 13 years now. We feel so sad for him as he entered it a young man. Now, he’ll be 40. But we’re not losing hope. His case is still under appeal with the Supreme Court. Teenager pa ako when he went in and what happened really made our family much stronger. ”

What does he think about the relationship of his sister, TV broadcaster Pinky Webb, with Edu Manzano?

“I don’t know anything about it. When I read about it in the papers, I asked her but she denied that they’re on. ”

But in case they’re on, would he be in favor of it? “How would I be? Ni hindi ko nga alam what’s the real situation between them. I don’t see them together except when I guested in their morning show dahil birthday ni Pinky. ”

How is Bayani Agbayani as his co-host in “My MVP”? “Enjoy ako working with him kasi masaya siya, he keeps the viewers entertained, at serious naman ako. So, balanse kami. Maganda ang rapport namin at wala kaming hiyaan sa show. We both care for the contestants at mahal namin ang show kaya sana, magkaroon ng second season. ”

‘SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS 2’: BELIEVABLE
ADAPTED from the popular chick flick series by Ann Brashares, “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” is the sequel to the story of four high school friends we met in 2005 in the first movie: Lena Kaligaris (Alexis Bledel), Carmen Lowell, (America Ferrera), Tibby Tomko Rollins (Amber Tamblyn) and Bridget Vreeland (Blake Lively. ) The four actresses who play them have become big stars on TV with their own hit shows: Amber in “Joan of Arcadia,” Blake in “Gossip Girl,” Alexis in “Gilmore Girls,” and the biggest of all who has even won an Emmy Award, America in the hit show “Ugly Betty. ”

In Part 2, it’s summer again and the girls are now in college. Lena is at the Rhode Island School of Design and learning how to paint. Her relationship with her Greek boyfriend ended when he got married and she now wants to have a new boyfriend, but she’s not sure if it’s going to be a hunky nude art model, Leo (Jesse Williams), who has taken an interest in her. Carmen is miserable at Yale without her friends and applies as a stagehand in a stage production of Shakespeare’s “A Winter’s Tale. ” She ends up trying out to play one of the lead roles, Perdita, while developing a crush on British actor Ian (Tom Wisdom).

Tibby has gone to New York U film school to write a screenplay and has given up her virginity to her boyfriend, Brian (Leonardo Nam). She is now nervous she might get pregnant because the condom he used broke. As for the tomboyish Bridget, she plays soccer at Brown U, meets the inspiring Prof. Mehani (Shohreh Aghdashloo) then takes an archaelogical expedition to Turkey only to dig up some secrets when she discovers that her dad (Ernie Lively) hid handwritten letters from her estranged grandma (Blythe Danner).

Carmen is once again the narrator. In the first movie, her dad was getting married anew. Now, her mom has also remarried and is pregnant. She accepts college friend Julia’s offer to go to Vermont and she promises the girls that their favorite jeans will be sent around in the same rotation procedure. The first movie was directed by a man, Ken Kwapis. The sequel is megged by the debuting Sanaa Hamri who manages to come up with a faster paced movie where the issues by the four lead characters are also resolved more quickly.

Just like “Sex and the City”, this series is about a quartet of best friends. The difference is that this one has very little sex and does not depend on raunchy humor. The appeal of the “Sisterhood” movies lies in the fact that the four girls come across as very believable individuals with their own strengths and weakness that we learn to care about. They learn that childhood friendship do not always succeed in surviving in the transition to adulthood since their respective individual plans pull them into different directions, but their magical traveling pants (which they found in a thrift store and is lost by Lena’s sister Effie) is still there to connect them with one another. In the end, the girls become independent women as they discover what they really want to do in life.

Credit must also go to the young actresses who slip into the skins of their respective characters with ease, becoming a bit older and wiser. Ugly Betty gives the most impressive portrayal in the film. The other girls are prettier and also deliver fairly engaging performances. Meantime, the pants keep on traveling and become the girls means of connecting with each other’s changing worlds by sending it to each other back and forth. (You start to wonder: do they ever wash it?)

Actresses are usually just decorative eye candy in a lot of films starring men. This time, it’s payback time and the tables are turned as it’s the men who assume superficial ornamental roles in this movie. Tom Wisdom, who looks somewhat like the late Heath Ledger, as Ian is the most charming. The production values are all fine, particularly the lensing of the summer locations that are given a chic romantic glow. The climax of the movie is set in Santorini, Greece, the very same location where the Richard-KC movie was shot. But how come Santorini looks much more beautiful and enticing here than in “For the First Time”?
