The trouble with Vhong's movie

Author: Remy Umerez
Column: A Little Bit

THE fact that his new movie, "Supah Papalicious," has the looks of an ordinary sitcom compressed into a feature movie poses a bigger challenge for the not-yet-that bankable Vhong Navarro who, for the first time is portraying a normal guy. Will his antics and several disguises as well work this time?

Lessening the burden is the presence of Makisig Morales of Super Inggo fame who plays Atong, the son of Valerie Concepcion's character, Athena, in this hilarious movie directed by Gilbert Perez for Star Cinema.

The core of Supah Papalicious is how orphaned boy Adonis (Vhong) pretends to have a big family to impress Athena (Valerie) and her son as well.

Laugh as loud as you can when you see Vhong transform himself into the characters of Tita Barbara, Lola Paulina and cousin Pol Dayap.

According to direk Gilbert, "We need to divert our minds from the many problems and issues even for only two hours. "

The solution offered, of course, is to watch Supah Papalicious.

GIVE JOJO A BREAK

ONE of the survivors of That's Entertainment is Jojo Alejar who is now hosting a talk show, All The Way with Jojo at QTV 11.

A big improvement in the show is its transfer to QTV11 where at least the camera functions well unlike in its former station where the camera remains stationery or "nakapako". Also, there is more room for guests to move at QTV11.

Always impeccably dressed in coat and tie, Jojo reminds us of a young Tom Hanks with a humor easy to swallow. He also loves to move a lot like Jim Carrey as he slips in his chair, do a little fancy steps or even kneel on the floor. He is so full of energy we won't be surprised if he tries to do a split.

Jojo's show is only 30 minutes nightly—too brief as when the guest happened to be Ariel and Maverick and too tiring if it were Mura or Mahal. His show is entertaining to a certain point because Jojo has a quick mind and he jokes every minute with a happy face. He exudes sunny disposition which makes him lovable despite a few corny cracks.

The laughter of Jojo augurs well with some of the sitcoms at GMA7 like Bubble Gang. We hope the top executives will include him in some teleseryes, too.

ALFRED IN INDONESIA

WHERE do movie stars go during Holy Week? Chan-ces are, most of them will enjoy Boracay which is a haven for many.

In the case of hunk Alfred Vargas, he will fly to Indonesia where a sister resides. He has taped all his shows in advance and hoping to begin with a new teleserye when he returns. It is whispered that he might join the cast of Dyesebel which reunites the hot loveteam of Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera. It will be recalled that Marian and Alfred did a teleserye called Muli when Marian was not yet a big star.

DRAMA COMES ALIVE

HISTORY comes alive at Veterans Federation of the Philippine Museum at Veterans Center, Taguig, Metro Manila.

The drama of ambuscades come alive in life-sized tableaus. Hand-carved wooden statues were sculpted by several artists from Paete, Pampanga, Bulacan and Manila. Narrations of battle scenes are further brought to life with a viewing of a commissioned film focused on the heroism of Freedom Fighters. There are mounted recreations of battles heightened by explosives and special effects in the bloodies fields of Bulacan and Batangas all designed to arouse the sentiments of young patriots.

The museum serves as a repository of courage with the original accounts handwritten amidst gunfires and bombings. There are rare books detailing the efforts of a people in fighting the Japanese invaders.

The novel fusion of visual arts rolls entertainment and education into one making the VFP Museum trips a learning experience hard to forget.
