What Willie is sick of

Author: Edgar Cruz
Column: BuzzStation

“Wala akong dapat ipaliwanag dahil paniwala ng puso ko ay hindi ako nandaya!” Wowowee host Willie Revillame told Eat...Bulaga! host Joey de Leon on national television in a rare outburst. For three days, Joey had been attacking Willie for supposedly cheating on the second day of Wilyonaryo, the game that replaced Ultimate Pera o Bayong. This is not the first time. Every time Wowowee experiences a major blow or when it shows strong performance in television ratings, Joey comes up with all sorts of jokes or statements to put Willie and his show down. In explaining himself, Willie said he only wants to entertain viewers, stating in specific terms, “Hindi ako marunong mandaya!” He pleaded for understanding as he’s a solo host who has to continue doing the show even when he’s sick.

In tears, he shouted in frustration, “Ikaw na ang number one! Sa inyo na ang ratings!”

The issue is about a “mechanical glitch,” as ABS-CBN Corporate Communications head Bong Osorio explained in an e-mailed statement to Buzzstation. I quote it in parts: “There was no cheating in the Aug. 20 episode of Wilyonaryo, the new game portion in Wowowee...The revelation of where the P2 million jackpot prize happened after the contestant decided to get Willie’s offer.” The contestant got the total winnings of P137,000. As such, the contestant could not have been cheated as she did not go for the jackpot. Whether the jackpot prize was “0” or “2” was immaterial in this case. Besides, “0” showed first in the jackpot. What followed, the “2” prize being pulled from the same jackpot, was circumstantial.

Willie did not try to hide this fact. He could have not shown the “2” if he had malicious intention. But tab and other reports including Joey’s did not mention this fact. They emphasized the “2” issue, showing malice. Vested interests decided to consider it a scam even if they were clearly clueless about the real facts.

Breaking buzz: What sickness is Willie talking about? If you’ve been regularly following the noontime show, some of the portions he used to do are now being handled by co-hosts Mariel Rodriguez and Valerie Concepcion with Bentong, floor director Owen Ercia and break period hosts Lassie and Eric Nicolas pinch-hitting for him. They do this to allow Willie to rest his voice. Willie has nodules in his throat, which has to be removed by surgery. The doctor needs seven days for operation and recovery. He has been trying to find the time but cannot quite get it as he has six-day viewers nationally and globally to entertain.

Maja superb in debut movie

Although My Kuya’s Wedding doesn’t measure up to Quija’s overall quality, it does show the obvious: That Maja Salvador is a superb actress even under the direction of a non-ABS-CBN megman. She is perfect for the role of a sister fearful of losing the love of her brother (Ryan Agoncillo), who set to tie the knot. This tells me that Topel Lee is a competent director although his second full-length feature is marred by budget scrimping such as the wedding scene’s empty tables and inconsistent cinematography. Is this movie equal or better than Kasal, Kasalo, Kasali, which inspired it? I don’t think so. The script lacks the sophistication of the Jose Javier Reyes screenplay although Maja’s acting matches Judy Ann Santos’. The movie stays highly entertaining with flashes of genius despite some irritants.

Try and try

This seems to be the code that Aria Daniella Clemente, Overall Grand Champion of the World (Junior Division) and Grand Champion Junior Vocalist of the World in the 11th World Championships of Performing Arts. Before these grand wins, she lost to Sam Concepcion in Little Big Star and to X in Little Big Superstar. She seems to be following Sarah Geronimo and Mau Marcelo’s winning formula of not giving up until she wins a championship. Look where it brought Sarah and Mau! You can catch Aria perform in the hit musical Children’s Letters to God at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City today and tomorrow. Kokey rules

Director Wenn Deramas’s experiment with scripwriter/creative manager Rondel Lindayag to mix an ugly but lovable Extra-Terrestrial worked! Kokey is now the country’s top teleserye, leading to its extension till October, pre-empting Lastikman’s September launch. He has been making the rounds of ABS-CBN show, even being interviewer by Boy Abunda in last Sunday’s The Buzz. Kokey will be among the stars who will join the Kapamilya Caravan in Gen. Santos City this weekend. He will be with Jodi Sta. Maria-Lacson and Bobby Andrews of Walang Kapalit to thank avid viewers for their love and support of the Kapamilya network. Kokey’s strength is his strong appeal to Pinoy children, which have never seen such a thing before in a locally created creature.

Mau’s promise

Philippine Idol grand champ Mau Marcelo just released her full size CD entitled I Shine For You under Sony/BMG Music Entertainment label. When she released her CD Lite as soon as she won, she promised to come up with a CD. All 11 tracks showcase her vocal range. She shocks by making a dance number of the sappy carrier single “I Shine For You.” Singing champs don’t usually do such things, but in Mau’s case, she gives dance divas such as Madonna, J Lo and Britney Spears stiff competition in the upbeat “I Shine For You (Remix).” This world-class dance number makes the butt bump; the arrangement is excellent with sound bits which are ear pleasers. Her treated voice more than amply shows she can do a dance song and do it credibly well!

Although full of high notes, “Try It On My Own” brings out Mau’s multi-layered voice. “Sino Ba Naman Ako?” is a beautiful introspection on unfulfilled love. “Your Love” brings out Mau’s textured Black-woman voice in a pop number. “Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin” swells with heartfelt feelings. “Labis-Labis” swings, song words contrasting the melody. In “Love Takes Time,” Mau does a world-song that could easily a chartbuster where they go gaga for sophisticated songs. The finger-snapping “Try Love” may make you sway to its lovely beat, for the joy it brings. “Hangga’t Kaya Ko Pa” uncovers the secret of Mau’s voice, which is highly nuanced. And penultimate number “Keep on Trying’” is Mau as Black singer all over again. Clearly, she dazzles in this debut.
