| | What concert will you watch? Column: Sounds Familiar Author: Baby A. Gil The price of oil has reached its all-time high and the world is facing a hunger crisis. But out here, the problem that the ever fun-loving Pinoy is facing is what concert he is going to watch within the next few weeks. It is Valentine season in May. Metro Manila is a veritable Las Vegas on weekend evenings. We are on a concert binge. Take a look at these fantastic selections. And mind you these are all only for this month. More shows have been scheduled to fill up your calendars until the end of the year. Here goes. Vanessa Carlton, the singer, pianist and songwriter, who had hits with A Thousand Miles, Big Yellow Taxi and Pretty Baby, will be at the Ayala Malls to launch Heroes and Thieves, her latest CD for MCA Music. Her schedule is the TriNoma Mall in Quezon City tonight at 7; the Glorietta Activity Center tomorrow, May 10, 7 p. m.; and the Alabang Town Center on May 11, 6 p. m. May 16 and 17 at the Music Museum have Greatest Hits of the '80s. This stars the leading singing heartthrobs from two decades ago in their very first concert together. These guys are not only lookers, they are also extraordinary vocalists who recorded some of the best remembered songs from the era. They are Louie Heredia (Iisang Damdamin, Nag-iisang Ikaw); Raymond Lauchengco (I Need You Back, So It's You); Gino Padilla (Closer You and I, Let the Love Begin); and Randy Santiago (Hindi Magbabago, Para Sa 'yo). The '60s hitmaker Neil Sedaka comes next with Neil Sedaka Sings His Greatest Hits Live at the Araneta Coliseum on May 17. This is Sedaka's third trip to the Philippines and the show is expected to also sell out like the first two. A singer/songwriter who trained to be a classical pianist at Julliard, Sedaka instead went on to create hits for himself and other artists. Some of his big sellers are The Diary, Breaking Up is Hard to Do, My Heart Keeps Getting Smaller Everyday, Stupid Cupid, Little Devil, One Way Ticket to the Blues, Run Samson Run, Love Will Keep Us Together, Where the Boys Are, etc. James Blunt, the British pop sensation behind the No. 1 seller You're Beautiful, will be at the Araneta Coliseum on May 19. A war hero who served in Serbia, a champion skier and one of the selected officers in the honor guard of the royal family, Blunt has now chosen to concentrate on his music. He has recorded two albums, Back to Bedlam and All the Lost Souls and will perform the best cuts in his show. Lea Salonga traces her story in Lea, My Life On Stage at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) on May 23 and 24. Presented by Enfakid with Freddie Santos as director and Gerald Salonga in charge of the music, the show will take the audience through Lea's career from her days as a child actress on the local stage and TV to her success as a star of Broadway and London's West End. There will be cocktails where holders of VIP tickets can meet and greet Lea after the show. Steve Tyrell, one of America's favorite interpreters of standard songs, topbills A New Standard: Steve Tyrell Live! on May 30 at PICC in Pasay. If you like Frank Sinatra, then I'm sure you will also love Tyrell. No, he is no copycat. Tyrell has his own style. His version of the Rodgers and Hart classic Manhattan is one of my favorites. It is just that like Old Blue Eyes, his music swings and he has this rich, sexy baritone that makes anything sound romantic. Also on May 30, the SMX Convention Center in Parañaque brings back the Golden Divas. It will be recalled that the trio composed of three of the country's best known singing stars, Pilita Corrales, Carmen Soriano and Carmen Pateña packed the Music Museum for two nights last March. So due to insistent public demand, they will be back in what will be their farewell concert before leaving for a tour of the US and Canada. To wrap up the merry month of May, the boy band Click Five will be at the Araneta Coliseum, also on May 30 in the Modern Minds and Pastimes Tour. Made up of Joe Guese, Ethan Mentzer, Ben Romans, Joey Zehr and of course Kyle Patrick, the Boston-based group has recorded two albums, Greetings from Imrie House and Modern Minds and Pastimes which contains the big hit Jenny.
