| Why Derek can't marry Angelica yet![]() Author: Aster Amoyo SPORTSMAN, model-turned actor Derek Ramsay is currently one of the busiest actors in town with more and more projects thrown on his lap. He has a new TV series on ABS-CBN, "Nasaan Ka, Maruja" with Kristine Hermosa, John Estrada and Karylle and he has two upcoming TV series, "Habang May Buhay" with Judy Ann Santos and "The Wedding" with Anne Curtis and Zanjo Marudo. He is also paired with Toni Gonzaga in one of the features of "Precious Hearts" and is currently busy doing a movie with real sweetheArt Angelica Panganiban together with Gabby Concepcion under Star Cinema with Laurice Guillen at the helm. Perhaps, his busy schedule is the major reason why he can't marry his girlfriend of three years, Angelica Panganiban, yet. For now, Derek admits that he is enjoying his relationship with Angel who is also busy with her own career. Derek is the second among five siblings - three girls and two boys. His eldest sister Rojiniel is already married with two kids and another sister next to him, Camela is also married with three children (all boys). Next to Camela is Natala and the youngest is Derek III. Their dad is British while their mom is half-Filipina and half-French. Born and raised in England, Derek and his family would regularly come to Manila for a vacation. He completed his high school at I. S. (International School) and Maria Montessori in Alabang. After high school, he went back to England to pursue a college degree at Chaltemham College where he took Physics/Chemistry/Math then moved to Boston to take up another course in Marketing. Whenever his schedule permits, he would come to Manila for a vacation. And each time he's in town, he would do some commercials which include Close-Up. In 2001, he joined MTV's VJ hunt and won. He also guested on ETK and eventually met talent manager Joji Dingcong who eventually convinced him to try showbiz. Joji got him a major commercial for San Miguel Beer and the rest, so they say, is history. After his San Miguel Beer commercial, Derek has become in-demand not only in product endorsements but also as an actor. And what's good, he gets to work with popular actors and directors. A couple of years ago, I chanced upon Derek at the Singapore airport. We happened to be in the same flight. He was with a group of friends. I later learned that they were a team competing for a certain sports competition in Singapore. Little did we know that we were all staying in the same hotel. Unknown to many, Derek is into different kind of sports since he was young and he is a focused person. Whatever he is into, he gives his 100% attention and commitment. Derek is one of the few actors we know who knows how to say `thank you' to people whenever they did something good for him be it big or small. CONNECTING WITH ALI THANKS to Facebook, I had a chance to get connected with longtime friends who are outside the Philippines like Ali Sotto, Bobby Yalung, Bernardo Bernardo, Lerma de la Cruz-Cailles, Long Espina, Oliver Carnay, Tony Vizmonte and a lot more. Singer-actress-turned radio anchor Ali Sotto has temporarily resettled in Madrid, Spain because of her diplomat husband's (Omar) assignment. Here's the message that Ali posted on her Facebook. "Thank God for Facebook. I'm able to catch up with my friends! Would you believe we've been here in Madrid for over a year na? Nangalahati na kami sa tour of duty ni Omar. He wants to `retire' in Manila in September 2010. Actually, it's more of a change in career as he wants to join the private sector after he leaves the State Department. "I am enjoying our time here a lot. And that's an understatement. We are making the most out of being in this neck of the woods and travel often. There's so much to see and do! "Pero pag naiisip ko naman ang Pilipinas, nalulungkot ako. I miss family and friends so very much. I miss work - especially the work I do for my advocacies. But I try to count my blessings. .. focus on what I have and not on what I don't (have). It may sound like a cliché but this really is the key to happiness! "Although there have been several opportunities to work (in and out of the embassy), I have decided not to. I don't want to commit to a job because I want to be able to up and leave when I want to - especially when friends come to visit. Ikaw. .. kailan mo planong pumarito? "Just give me a holler! "O siya. .. keep me in the loop of things. .. cuidate, mi amiga. .. un abrazo fuerte. .. " "The last time we saw Ali and her husband, Omar was about two years ago at the intimate birthday party that common friend Fanny Serrano hosted for us at his Quezon City residence. JINGGOY FEELS LIGHT When the project was offered to Jinggoy, he did not think twice after reading the script. "Ang ganda ng script. Ibinigay ko kaagad kay Direk Mel (Chionglo) ang available schedule ko for the shoot," says the young senator. Jinggoy plays the role of a hard-hitting radio commentator. Ricky is the corrupt mayor who will hire Richard to liquidate Jinggoy. Snooky plays the wife of Jinggoy and Iza, wife of Richard. "I seldom do movies and I am proud that this project ("Bente") was given to me," claims Jinggoy. Aside from "Bente," Jinggoy gets elated each time people notice his trim body. He already lost more than 40 lbs. "Ang gaan pala ng pakiramdam `pag payat ka," he smiles. The actor-politician informed us that he's also doing another film to be directed by Joyce Bernal. He is not joining the Metro Manila Film Festival this year because his dad, former Pres. Joseph Estrada has a film entry under Star Cinema which will pair him with popular singer-comedienne Ai-Ai de las Alas. This will be Erap's comeback movie. RICHARD'S ADVOCACIES WE would like to thank Ben Chan and Keren Pascual for always inviting us to the different launches of Bench products, the most recent of which was the grand launch of the brand's newest scent, Gutz and Glory with Richard Gutierrez as the sole celebrity endorser. The grand launch was held at the Center Stage of SM Mall of Asia and supported by Richard's immediate family and friends, members of the press and Richard's fans. Richard's parents - Eddie Gutierrez and Annabelle Rama, sister Ruffa Gutierrez and her daughters - Lorin and Venice were there, twin-brother Raymond. We also spotted there some talents of his mom, Miriam Quiambao and Ehra Madrigal. Although Richard is caught up in some controversies, this does not stop him from doing and committing himself to his own beliefs and advocacies. A grounded person, Richard is among the well-loved personalities in the biz. Aside from his top-rating TV series, "Zorro," he is soon to start his reunion flick with his estranged girlfriend, Anne Curtis to be directed by Maryo J. de los Reyes under GMA Films and Viva Films. As to his lovelife, Richard admits that he is in love (again) but refuses to divulge the identity of the girl. Could it be JM? SAMANTHA BREEZES INTO TOWN LAST Tuesday evening, we were at Toki restaurant in Bonifacio Global City when we bumped into Samantha Lopez having dinner with a couple of friends. Good friends Ruffa Gutierrez, BB Gandanghari, Pepper Teehankee and former Press Secretary Michael Toledo later joined Samantha's group. The former "Eat Bulaga's" Graciaaaa has been based in New Yor for the last seven years and she was just in town for a couple of days to catch up Richard Gomez's Goma Cup held in Boracay. We learned from Samantha that she manages two restaurants in New York, an Italian Restaurant and a Mexican Restaurant called Manana. Before flying back to New York the following day (Wednesday), Samantha managed to re-connect with some of her old friends. <a_amoyo@pimsi. net> Source: People's Journal |
