A street in Pasig City is named after him. He has won all the awards to be won as a writer, producer and director. So what else does Komiks King Carlo J. Caparas want to achieve? "Totally revived the public's interest in the komiks," said Carlo who, with his wife Donna Villa, has successfully launched what they called the Komiks Caravan nationwide last year. "We are surely getting there." Also last year, Carlo (and Donna) organized the Kongreso ng Komiks which brought together komiks publicists, komiks writers and komiks illustrators. That's what occupies the so-called Golden Couple (named after their movie outfit, Golden Lions) while they are "on leave" from producing movies (for want of a good material?), in the process helping propagate the National Language to as far as the hinterlands which can very effectively reached by, you guessed it, the komiks. For his effort, Carlo has been duly recognized by various government agencies with awards, nine so far, the latest having been the prestigious PASATAF Gawad Sagisag Balagtas Award given to him last week during the 52nd-anniversary celebration of the Pambansang Samahan ng Mga Tagamasid at Tagapagtaguyod ng Filipino (PASATAF) at the Teacher's Camp in Baguio City. Headed by Dr. Alberto A. Macob, PASATAF is the organization of more than a million teachers from all over the country. "I share the award with my colleagues in the komiks industry," said Carlo who was lauded by Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo together with Vice Pres. Noli de Castro, Senate president Manny Villar and Chief Justice Reynato Puno. PGMA also praised the PASATAF for choosing Carlo as the recipient of the organization's highest award. Other government officials who conveyed their praises for Carlo included Speaker Prospero Nograles, DepEd Usec Vilma Labrador (also the president of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts), Cecile Guidote-Alvarez (NCCA executive director) and Joe Lad Santos (of the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino). What next for Carlo...the National Artist honors? Not too far-fetched, is it? Allen goes wholesome As promised, Allen Dizon is slowly but surely veering away from the "bold" toward the "wholesome," starting with his role as the boyfriend of 15 years junked by Ai-Ai delas Alas because of his unfulfilled promises in Viva Films' romantic-comedy Ikaw Pa Rin (Bongga Ka, Boy), with Robin Padilla as the lead actor (going comedy for a change). "Comedy is something new to me," admitted Allen who was named Best Supporting Actor by both the FAMAS and the Philippine Movie Press Club's Star Awards for Movies in 2006 for his performance as a doomed male prostitute in Mel Chionglo's Twilight Dancers. "For a dream sequence, Ai-Ai and I were made to look old, uugod-ugod, and it took four hours for our makeup to be applied. Thanks to Ai-Ai, a great comedienne, for making things easy for me." Allen will be seen next in Paupahan (formerly Crossroads) which he himself produces under his own ATD Entertainment Productions, directed by Joven Tan and photographed by Romy Vitug, with Gloria Romero, Snooky Serna, Angelu de Leon, Jay Manalo, Krista Ranillo, Joseph Bitangcol, Kirby de Jesus and Mon Confiado as co-stars. He's also in the cast of Viva Films' Room 213, with Gwen Garci, directed by New York-based Keith Sicat (who directed Rigodon, which won Best Feature Film Panorama of Independent Filmmakers in Greece).
